According to Russian Railways, the train was traveling from the capital of Kazan in the Republic of Tatarstan (Russia) to the Adler region on the Black Sea coast when it was forced to brake suddenly when it saw the Kamaz truck entering the railway crossing despite the alarm.
The train crashed into the truck at a speed of about 65 km/h near Kotelnikovo station, located in the southern Volgograd region, about 1,200 km south of Moscow.
"About 140 people suffered injuries and bruises," Russian Railways said, adding that 15 people, including three children, were taken to hospital for treatment.
The Mash Telegram channel said the Kamaz driver who broke traffic laws was thrown about 15 meters by the collision and is in critical condition. The channel also released a video showing the truck’s cabin smashed and a man believed to be the driver with a bloody face.
Mash channel earlier said two people had died in the collision, but this information has not been confirmed by Russian officials.
Video footage released by state news agency TASS shows several train carriages derailed, some of them deformed.
Russia's emergency services said firefighters and rescuers were trying to rescue passengers. A total of nine carriages were derailed.
