The Khmer Times on December 21 quoted Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen as saying that Japanese ships will be the first to dock at Ream Port in Sihanoukville province once the project is completed.
He gave the information when receiving Japanese National Security Advisor Akiba Takeo for a courtesy visit at the Cambodian Senate on December 20.
According to Mr. Hun Sen, Cambodia will allow Japanese ships to dock first at Ream Port after completing construction, symbolizing the strong relationship between the two countries.
On this occasion, Mr. Takeo thanked Mr. Hun Sen for taking time out of his busy schedule to meet the Japanese delegation and welcomed Mr. Hun Sen's important role in leading Cambodia towards peace, stability and prosperity after going through a painful and tragic history.
Mr. Takeo emphasized the strong and growing relationship between Cambodia and Japan in all areas, including security, under the leadership of Mr. Hun Sen.
In addition, Mr. Takeo shared an update on Japan’s review of its national security strategy to adapt to the changing regional situation. The strategy emphasizes strengthening constructive dialogue with partner countries and major powers, including China. He added that dialogue and cooperation, especially with China, are essential to achieving stability, prosperity and development.
Mr. Takeo reaffirmed Japan's commitment to strengthening cooperation with Cambodia, ASEAN and other countries to ensure stability and development in the region.

For his part, Mr. Hun Sen warmly welcomed Mr. Takeo and the delegation, expressing hope that their visit and discussions will further strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation, promoting deeper mutual understanding.
He noted that the progress in defense cooperation, both at sea and on land, is a reflection of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.
He also appreciated the steady progress in Cambodia-Japan relations in many areas, expressing his appreciation for Japan's long-term support for Cambodia's development. This support includes infrastructure construction, such as the development of Sihanoukville port and logistics systems.
