The classic series Planet Earth III has earned five nominations at the 76th Emmy Awards in 2024, including two nominations for episode 6: "Extreme" featuring the Son Doong Cave scene.
Episode 6 delves into the planet's harshest environments, featuring stunning images of Vietnam's famous cave system. Filmed over three weeks in early 2022, the crew braved difficult conditions to capture the awe-inspiring beauty of Son Doong, En, Va and Nuoc Nut caves in Quang Binh. BBC's Planet Earth III, which airs in late October 2023, takes viewers on a journey to the most pristine places on the planet. Episode 6 "Extreme" aired on November 26, 2023, introduced Son Doong Cave to a global audience with breathtaking footage captured by leading documentary filmmakers.

Filming took place from January 27 to February 19, 2022. The BBC crew, led by producer Theo Webb, consisted of six members and a production team from the US and UK. They brought more than a ton of filming equipment to capture the natural beauty of Vietnam, with logistical support from Oxalis. Filming inside the caves, including Son Doong, En, Va and Nuoc Nut, was challenging due to the complete darkness. Not to mention, this was during the pandemic, the crew was still quarantined in hotels and the preparation was more difficult than usual. The team used advanced lighting systems and modern filming equipment to achieve outstanding images. They worked tirelessly for more than 20 days in Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park to capture these spectacular images.

According to Luke Nelson, lighting the cave was a huge challenge. The crew used specialized cameras and lenses to showcase the stunning features of the cave and its underground river. The team used a variety of equipment, including drones, DSLRs, and large format cameras. They spent a week filming from the cave entrance to the mysterious underground river. Using advanced technology and many different angles, the team meticulously captured every moment and movement in the cave ecosystem. Sharing with Variety , the crew was captivated by the breathtaking view at the cave entrance, where sunlight streamed through, creating a magical and unique scene. They set up 5 to 6 cameras to capture different angles and filmed time-lapse throughout the day to make sure they didn't miss any of the spectacular moments.

The crew then focused on the diverse ecosystem of Son Doong and explored the mysterious Garden of Eden – a unique rainforest that thrives beneath. The team also filmed some of the most adventurous activities, including a high-wire walk by cave expert Martin Holroyd and footage of the 90m-high wall and massive stalagmite at the end of the cave. The second nomination was for outstanding music composition for a documentary. The music brought the series to life, creating a captivating soundscape that drew viewers deeper into the breathtaking natural world depicted on screen.
