On the afternoon of November 14, the Standing Committee of the Quang Tri Provincial Party Committee had a working session with TKV on research and investment proposals in the area. Before that, the TKV delegation surveyed the Southeast Quang Tri Economic Zone and the area where the My Thuy deep-water port is being built (Hai Lang district).

Mr. Ngo Hoang Ngan - Chairman of the Board of Members of TKV - said that the group was assigned by the Government to supply coal to power plants.

It is expected that from 2025, TKV will import about 5 million tons of coal/year from Laos and Quang Tri province has the best conditions for import. Part of this coal will be processed locally, the rest will be exported nationwide.

Accordingly, coal from the southern provinces of Laos is imported into Quang Tri through La Lay international border gate (Dakrong district), then transported to My Thuy seaport.

Currently, Quang Tri is promoting investment in National Highway 15D to facilitate coal import. Of which, 58km is maintained, upgraded and newly invested by the State, 34km is completing the pre-feasibility study report under the PPP method. In addition, the Cam Lo - Lao Bao expressway is also being studied for construction.

TKV General Director Vu Anh Tuan informed that in addition to at least 5 million tons of coal/year imported from Laos, the unit also brings coal to be mixed and processed in Quang Tri, so the total volume can reach 8-10 million tons/year, with an increasing trend over the years.

Through the survey, TKV Group proposed 45 hectares of land in the Southeast Quang Tri Economic Zone, near My Thuy seaport to invest in 2 projects and wanted to speed up the progress for the group to research.

The project includes closed coal warehouse facilities, coal conveying and mixing conveyor systems; crushing and blending screening systems...

Mr. Le Quang Tung – Secretary of the Quang Tri Provincial Party Committee – said that these proposals open up a new development direction for Quang Tri province. “With the experience and capacity of TKV Group, the province hopes that the group will support the province to develop the coal industry effectively and hopes that the project will be implemented soon,” said Mr. Tung.

Secretary Le Quang Tung requested that departments and branches must have a different mindset, both reporting and requesting approval, granting procedures and implementing, and giving special priority to this project. The departments must urgently and resolutely take action so that the project can soon come into reality.

In the first 11 months of 2024, Quang Tri imported 1.7 million tons of coal from Laos. In 2023, Quang Tri province imported 2.4 million tons of coal from Laos.
