Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Manh Hung received Mr. Alex Rogers, President of Global Technology and Development of Qualcomm Corporation in Washington DC.

On May 12, 2022, during the trip accompanying Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh to visit and work in the US, Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Manh Hung received Mr. Alex Rogers, President of Global Technology and Development of Qualcomm Corporation in Washington DC.

At the meeting, Minister Nguyen Manh Hung emphasized that Qualcomm has had effective initial cooperation with Vietnamese technology companies. According to the Minister, cooperation between Qualcomm and Vietnamese technology companies needs to be promoted at a higher level. For example, Qualcomm and Viettel signed an agreement on technology to develop 5G products, which is a good step forward. VNPT also has some good initial cooperation with Qualcomm. Qualcomm has participated as an advisory group for the Steering Committee for 6G development of the Ministry of Information and Communications.

“We are setting up labs to test 5G devices made in Vietnam and other countries. Therefore, I hope Qualcomm will support the Ministry of Information and Communications in developing standards and tests, not only for 5G but also for 6G,” said the Minister of Information and Communications.

Minister Nguyen Manh Hung emphasized that 5G and later 6G technology will become the foundation of the digital economy. Therefore, network security and 5G and 6G devices are very important to achieve digital trust in this step.

At the meeting, Mr. Alex Rogers highly appreciated Vietnam for accelerating and having a vision in developing 6G technology. Qualcomm is cooperating with enterprises such as Viettel, VNPT, MobiFone, BKAV, Vinfast in areas such as designing, developing and manufacturing 5G network infrastructure equipment, supporting 5G technology testing, supporting the design and production of AI camera devices, connectivity solutions for electric vehicles and smart charging station systems.

Viettel joins hands with Qualcomm to produce 5G equipment

On February 28, 2023, at the Mobile World Congress (MWC 2023), Viettel and Qualcomm announced the successful research and production of the world's first 5G base station radio block (32 transmitters, 32 receivers) using ASIC chipsets according to Qualcomm's Open Ran standard.

Accordingly, Viettel High Tech is Qualcomm's first partner globally to complete the manufacturing of a 5G base station radio transceiver block using Qualcomm's QRU100 5G RAN chipset after only 7 months of cooperation. The two sides are integrating the radio transceiver block with the baseband processing block using Qualcomm's X100 5G RAN chipset. Viettel High Tech's engineering team participated in the research process, proposed optimal solutions and completed the production of complete circuit boards for the 5G base station in only 1/3 of the time compared to the normal development process. This result far exceeded the expectations of Qualcomm, the world's leading telecommunications chip manufacturing group.

Mr. Durga Malladi, Senior Vice President and General Manager of 5G at Qualcomm visited Viettel's booth at MWC 2023.

Viettel's 5G base station radio block is also the first product in the world to use this chip line. This is a breakthrough, opening up opportunities to change the telecommunications network infrastructure equipment manufacturing industry due to its ability to reduce costs and eliminate dependence on proprietary chipsets of other equipment manufacturers.

Following this success, Viettel will complete 5G equipment (64 transmitters, 64 receivers) to serve network operators broadcasting to areas with many high-rise buildings that need high and deep coverage.

Mr. Nguyen Vu Ha, General Director of Viettel High Tech, said that the cooperation results with Qualcomm will promote the commercialization process of Viettel's 5G products on a large scale.

Speaking about this event, Mr. Durga Malladi, Senior Vice President and General Manager of 5G at Qualcomm said: "The cooperation between the two sides in developing solutions according to the Open RAN standard will help network operators around the world deploy 5G networks more easily."

Viettel and Qualcomm announced the successful research and production of the world's first 5G base station radio block using ASIC chipset.

VNPT joins hands with US corporation to promote 5G application

On May 11, 2022, VNPT and Casa Systems signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly explore, exploit and apply techniques and technologies in the field of 5G in Vietnam.

In Vietnam, VNPT Group is focusing on implementing the strategy of developing 5G network and developing a portfolio of digital services, affirming its leading role in developing digital infrastructure and providing digital services.

With the signed memorandum of understanding, the two sides hope to cooperate, research, develop, integrate, and package VNPT's solutions with Casa's technology solutions such as 5G core and RAN, Security GW... to provide digital solutions to the market, meeting the needs of corporate and government customers.

Mr. Huynh Quang Liem, General Director of VNPT Group said: “The cooperation with Casa Systems is a next step in the roadmap for developing digital infrastructure, focusing on developing the 5G network, helping VNPT quickly develop digital services, learn new technologies, improve the capacity of VNPT's human resources, as well as take advantage of the expert resources and experience of partners to cooperate in research and build solutions and services suitable to the needs of the Vietnamese market".

On May 11, 2022, in the United States, under the witness of Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo, VNPT and Casa Systems signed and exchanged a memorandum of understanding between the two parties.

At the same time, VNPT and Cisco signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in designing and launching a digital transformation solution package for businesses.

To form and provide digital infrastructure in Vietnam, the two sides will jointly design and deploy the optimization of VNPT's backbone network infrastructure in the direction of virtualization, in parallel with the development and creation of new, safe and flexible product packages and connection solutions for businesses by applying advanced technologies such as SDN, SD WAN. In addition, VNPT and Cisco will also coordinate in researching and developing 5G core networks to manage and deploy high-speed, low-latency, secure 5G connection applications... to help businesses in Vietnam have the conditions to connect and achieve digital transformation goals.

“We will combine the best of both worlds to deliver next-generation network infrastructure based on software-defined optical networking technology, ensuring service agility and delivering high-quality digital services to small, medium and large enterprises in the 5G era,” said Sanjay Kaul, President, Service Provider Solutions Business, Cisco Systems, Asia Pacific.

In the process of Vietnamese enterprises researching, developing and applying new technologies, cooperation with US technology corporations plays an important role in promoting the strengths of all parties. In addition, some US technology corporations such as Apple, Intel ... have also invested in factories producing technology equipment in the Vietnamese market and consider this an important market in their production chain. The US Apple Corporation has completed the transfer of a series of factories producing audio-visual equipment to Vietnam. Meanwhile, Intel is expanding the second phase of its chip testing factory in Vietnam.

An important reason why American technology corporations invest in Vietnam is that production costs in Vietnam are lower than in other countries. This helps reduce production costs and increase the competitiveness of products. The Vietnamese government has also introduced many policies to attract foreign investment, including attractive tax policies for manufacturers.

Digital technology and AI will be a breakthrough in Vietnam-US cooperation . Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ha Kim Ngoc shared that science, technology and innovation will be a breakthrough area of cooperation between Vietnam and the US, focusing on creating a digital technology platform, semiconductor ecosystem, or applying artificial intelligence.
