The workshop, organized by the Vietnam Handicraft Village Association, was held on November 5th in Hai Duong . More than 100 representatives from the Departments of Industry and Trade and handicraft villages from provinces and cities in the North participated in the workshop.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development , the country currently has over 5,400 craft villages and villages with traditional crafts, employing more than 13 million workers and generating export value exceeding US$1.7 billion per year. Vietnamese handicrafts have strong vitality, but limitations in design, packaging, and product variety are weaknesses that reduce the value of the products and make it difficult to meet the increasingly high demands of customers.
Overall, handicrafts are considered to have great export potential and high profit margins. Therefore, a change in mindset regarding design, packaging, and labeling is needed to clearly differentiate between product quality and design quality, increase product value, and create a competitive advantage for Vietnamese handicrafts in export markets.
According to the Vietnam Handicraft Village Association, many years ago, Vietnamese handicrafts were favored by foreign markets due to their novelty, but now their appeal has significantly decreased because of a lack of innovation in design. Currently, up to 90% of Vietnamese handicraft products are based on designs provided by foreign customers and use their labels because we lack creativity in product design.

Packaging is not just about containing, protecting, organizing, displaying, and introducing products to increase their value. To create beautiful designs that appeal to customers, designers and manufacturers need to collaborate more closely. Businesses and artisans should partner with art and design training institutions; and regularly organize design competitions to create new designs that meet customer criteria and requirements.
