According to statistics from the Ministry of Health, compared to the first 3 months of the year, the measles incidence has begun to decrease (6%) in the group from 1 to 10 years old (accounting for 61.4%); decreased slightly (0.4%) in the group under 1 year old (accounting for 2.7%, including the group of children under 6 months old who are not indicated for measles vaccination).
However, the disease increased by 6.4% in the group over 10 years old (accounting for 35.9%, mainly in the group from 11 to 15 years old accounting for 19.2% and the group over 16 years old accounting for 16.7%).
Therefore, the Ministry of Health has decided to launch the third measles vaccination campaign in 2025.
The vaccine used in this vaccination campaign is 500,000 doses of measles-containing vaccine sponsored by a corporation.
It is expected that the first round of vaccine allocation will be completed before April 30 and the second round before May 15. The Ministry of Health will immediately allocate vaccines to localities to promptly implement the vaccination campaign.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Lien Huong, Deputy Minister of Health, said that the goal of the plan to implement the 3rd phase of the measles vaccination campaign in 2025 is that 95% of children who have not been vaccinated or have not received enough doses of vaccine will be vaccinated with 1 dose of vaccine containing measles.
The target groups of the plan include:
- Children 6 months of age who have not been vaccinated in the previous 2 campaigns.
- Children from 6 months to under 9 months old, not vaccinated in these 2 campaigns in risk areas, areas where measles cases/measles outbreaks are occurring.
- Children from 11 to 15 years old in high/very high risk communes/wards who have not been vaccinated, have not received enough doses, and have unknown vaccination history or measles history.
In response to the World Health Organization's warning of a measles outbreak in Vietnam and the actual developments of the epidemic situation in localities, from the end of 2024 to the beginning of this year, the Ministry of Health has organized two vaccination campaigns to prevent and control measles.
Accordingly, the 2024 campaign achieved 97.1% and the 2025 campaign phase 1 achieved 95.5%.
The initial target group is children from 1 to 10 years old and high-risk groups, then expanded to include children from 6 months to 9 months old in risk areas and areas where measles cases/measles outbreaks are occurring.
On March 15, the Prime Minister issued a telegram on accelerating measles vaccination. Following the Prime Minister's direction, the Ministry of Health issued a plan to implement the second phase of the 2025 campaign and achieved 96.4% results. The campaign will continue to be implemented for children from 6 months to 9 months old and children from 1 year to 10 years old.
