Donating buoys and seaweed seeds to help fishermen resume production soon

Storm No. 3 made landfall directly in Quang Ninh province, causing extremely heavy damage to the aquaculture industry. In Van Don district alone, the largest marine farming area in Quang Ninh province, tens of thousands of cages were swept away, causing an estimated loss of nearly VND3,700 billion.

Mr. Nguyen Van Dien, an aquaculture farmer in Van Don, said: After the storm, his family, like hundreds of other farming households, were left with almost nothing: “The storm left me completely empty-handed. Boats sank, aquaculture rafts were swept away. The buoys and boats donated will help us gradually overcome difficulties. We are very excited and grateful!"

1,000 buoys and HDPE boats partly help aquaculture farmers in Van Don quickly reproduce.

More than 1,000 buoys and HDPE boats along with 1 million seaweed seeds are gifts from 3 units that are carrying out marine farming in Quang Ninh. With the desire to partially support fishermen to gradually restore production, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hai Binh, representative of a sponsoring unit, said that the HDPE boats named "Happiness" will help fishermen easily move into small areas to facilitate the process of oyster and seaweed cultivation:

"We have also researched and improved the buoy production system. In the near future, we will upgrade the buoy product design for mollusk farming and seaweed cultivation by having the names of households and cooperatives on the buoys. So that if there is a storm, big storms can be traced according to the records, with positioning devices attached, easy to detect, avoiding damage to the people." - Ms. Binh said.

Quang Ninh is striving to speed up the implementation of aquaculture and seafood standards so that fishermen can quickly resume production.

To restore production soon, the government and businesses are joining hands to support fishermen. Quang Ninh province has also made recommendations to the central government on a number of credit policies, unsecured loans, mortgages using production and business plans and low interest rate support to help businesses easily access capital.

Mr. Phan Thanh Nghi, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quang Ninh province said: "To reproduce, we focus on two main issues. The first is sea allocation, this is the legal basis for people to be able to invest in the assigned sea area. The second is about sea farming standards, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quang Ninh province proposed to the Provincial People's Committee, currently implementing the process to soon issue standards to guide people in sea farming to apply".
