The durian growing area is most concentrated in Da Huoai, Di Linh, and Bao Lam districts with a total area of 19,808 hectares and an output of 140,696 tons, accounting for 77.3% of the area and 80.3% of the total output of the province. Compared to the total durian area and output of the province, Da Huoai district accounts for the highest proportion with 39.8% and 43.5%; followed by Di Linh district with 23.8% and 21.8%; Bao Lam district with 13.8% and 14.8%. The area of durian with water-saving irrigation is over 7,000 hectares; certified safety according to VietGAP standards for 500 hectares. In 2021, the Provincial People's Committee recognized 300 hectares of high-tech durian production area in Ha Lam commune, Da Huoai district.
Every year, the main durian varieties Dona and Ri 6 in Da Huoai district are harvested from May 15 to June 30, coinciding with the main durian harvest season in the provinces of the West, Southeast and Thailand. The districts of Bao Lam, Di Linh, Duc Trong, Lam Ha, Dam Rong and Bao Loc city are harvested from September 20 to October 30, coinciding with the harvest time of the Central Highlands provinces.
To date, the province has been granted 114 growing area codes with a total area of nearly 5,490 hectares and 10 durian packaging facilities with a factory area of nearly 13,420 m2, producing, processing and consuming in the form of association. Specifically, Da Huoai district (77 codes, more than 3,726 hectares, 1,697 households); Di Linh (14 codes, 540 hectares, 271 households); Bao Lam (14 codes, more than 763 hectares, 289 households); Dam Rong (4 codes, 212.5 hectares, 49 households); Lam Ha (2 codes, 82.8 hectares, 22 households); Bao Loc city (1 code, 56.8 hectares, 33 households). Long Thuy Production and Trading Company Limited was granted a common growing area code of 134 hectares with 73 associated households in Di Linh, Bao Lam and Da Huoai districts.
In the period of 2023 - 2024, the whole province has monitored 116 durian growing areas and packaging facilities; collected 759 samples for pest identification, analyzed pesticide residues, heavy metals cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb). As a result, 11 durian samples were found to be infected with mealybugs; 6 samples were infected with Cd at a very low level of 0.020-0.024 mg/kg compared to the maximum limit of China (maximum allowable limit of 0.05 mg/kg). Thereby, the Department has notified the growing areas infected with heavy metals to implement the regulations of the importing country and Vietnam; strengthen strict control of fertilizers and pesticides in the list permitted in Vietnam; use according to the 4 correct principles and ensure the isolation period when harvesting products; Absolutely do not use fertilizers and pesticides containing heavy metals and lead.
In 2024 alone, there will be no durian growing areas or packaging facilities in the province that have been temporarily suspended or recalled by the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection due to heavy metal residue contamination in products exported to China. In the first quarter of 2025, the Department of Agriculture and Environment issued documents requesting the People's Committees of districts and cities; specialized agencies, units, enterprises, cooperatives, and cooperative groups to continue to strengthen control of plant quarantine objects, heavy metals, and food safety in durian growing areas and packaging facilities exported to the Chinese market...
Currently, the Intellectual Property Office grants certificates and registers durian trademarks in Da Huoai and Di Linh districts; the Department of Agriculture and Environment has integrated support for businesses and cooperatives to link production and consumption of durian. In 2024, Vietnam and China will sign a Protocol on the export of frozen durian, helping to diversify the processing of durian with shell, pureed durian and durian pulp without shell, reducing pressure on harvest season, creating greater added value for businesses, cooperatives and farmers producing and trading durian.
In the coming time, the Department of Agriculture and Environment will further strengthen the inspection and strict monitoring of plant quarantine objects and heavy metal and lead residues on durian in growing areas, packaging facilities that have been granted codes and local purchasing and consumption facilities. At the same time, it will propagate and guide organizations and individuals to apply durian cultivation processes to achieve productivity and quality; encourage the use of biochar to improve and treat soil. In particular, durian growing areas exporting to China do not use fertilizers and pesticides containing heavy metals and lead and ensure a quarantine period before harvest to avoid residues in the product; do not use yellow o in the preliminary processing and preservation of durian products...
