On the afternoon of January 17, at the National Assembly House, Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Nguyen Duc Hai received Mr. Bernd Lange, Chairman of the European Parliament's International Trade Committee.
Affirming that Vietnam always attaches importance to and wishes to promote comprehensive partnership and cooperation with the European Union (EU), Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Nguyen Duc Hai expressed his delight at the positive development of the Vietnam-EU relationship in general and the cooperation between the Vietnamese National Assembly and the European Parliament in particular.
After 33 years of establishing diplomatic relations and 11 years of Comprehensive Partnership and Cooperation, Vietnam is an important partner of the EU in ASEAN and in the Asia-Pacific region.
The Vice Chairman of the National Assembly emphasized that the Vietnamese National Assembly highly appreciated the two sides maintaining a substantive and effective inter-parliamentary dialogue channel through delegation exchanges. Within the framework of parliamentary cooperation, the mechanisms/forms of inter-parliamentary cooperation and dialogue are proving effective.
Stating that the implementation of the Vietnam-EU Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) will help two-way trade between the two sides grow positively, the Vice Chairman of the National Assembly said that Vietnam will seriously and fully implement the commitments in the Agreement as well as the international commitments that Vietnam has participated in.
According to Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Nguyen Duc Hai, investment cooperation between the two sides will have much room to develop when the Vietnam-EU Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) is ratified by all parliaments of EU member states and comes into effect. This agreement is very suitable for the EU4's "Global Gateway" initiative and the "Partnership for a Fair Energy Transition" Agreement between Vietnam and a group of international partners, including the EU.
The Vice Chairman of the National Assembly proposed that the European Parliament support the enhancement of comprehensive partnership and cooperation between Vietnam and the EU and its member countries in all fields, including the inter-parliamentary cooperation channel; support the enhancement of Vietnam-EU cooperation in the fields of green transformation, digital transformation, and climate change response.
Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Nguyen Duc Hai asked the Chairman of the European Parliament's International Trade Committee to urge the European Commission (EC) to soon remove the IUU yellow card on Vietnam's seafood exports to the EU, contributing to ensuring the livelihoods of Vietnamese fishermen and supply for the EU market; and urge the EU and its member countries to continue to have a strong voice, supporting the stance of Vietnam and ASEAN on peacefully resolving disputes in the East Sea on the basis of respect for international law, especially the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
Chairman of the European Parliament’s International Trade Committee Bernd Lange said that in recent times, the two sides have had many exchanges to implement the commitment between the Vietnamese National Assembly and the European Parliament on establishing a regular dialogue mechanism on EVFTA. The two sides’ maintenance of the dialogue mechanism is of practical significance in promoting Vietnam-EU cooperation.
Emphasizing that the implementation of the EVFTA has brought many driving forces to promote economic and political relations between the two sides, Mr. Bernd Lange affirmed that Vietnam is an important partner in the EU's ASEAN region and with impressive growth in recent times, it shows that the potential for development cooperation between the two sides is still very large.
Mr. Bernd Lange said that through the discussion, the leader of the Directorate General of Fisheries of the European Commission highly appreciated Vietnam's efforts in equipping fishing vessels with monitoring equipment and efforts to handle backlogs according to EU recommendations.
In addition, Vietnamese law has many provisions to internalize international treaties and approach international practices. In the process of implementing commitments, the two sides need to continue to exchange and improve understanding, reach consensus on solutions to implement recommendations and strengthen enforcement supervision.
Emphasizing that there are many issues of mutual concern to both sides, the Chairman of the European Parliament's International Trade Committee proposed maintaining an open, friendly and constructive exchange and dialogue mechanism, thereby further promoting the Vietnam-EU Comprehensive Partnership and Cooperation.
