*Mr. Shigeru Ishiba was elected as the new Prime Minister of Japan: On October 1, at the House of Representatives, Mr. Shigeru Ishiba, leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), was elected as the new Prime Minister of Japan.
Earlier in the day, local media reported that members of the Japanese Cabinet under Prime Minister Kishida Fumio resigned en masse, ending their tenure after about three years. *Russian and Chinese warships patrol together in the Pacific: In a statement on October 1, the Russian Pacific Fleet announced that warships from its country and China have begun joint patrols in the Asia-Pacific after joint exercises.
"Russian and Chinese naval warships resupplied in the Sea of Okhotsk after participating in the 'Beibu/Interaction - 2024' exercise, established a tactical group and began patrolling missions in the Asia-Pacific region. The group passed through the Bussol Strait and entered the Northwest Pacific Ocean," the statement stressed.
Earlier, a joint flotilla of ships from the Russian Pacific Fleet and the Chinese Navy departed from Vladivostok on September 21 to participate in the Beibu/Interaction - 2024 naval exercise. (Sputniknews)

*Ukraine claims to have shot down 29 Russian UAVs: The Ukrainian Air Force announced on October 1 that it had shot down 29 out of 32 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) launched by Russia in a night attack.
According to the announcement, the above-mentioned UAVs produced by Iran were shot down in the central, southern and northeastern regions of Ukraine.
Earlier, Russia launched a UAV attack on Kiev at dawn on September 30, forcing Ukrainian air defense units to participate in repelling the airstrike. (Reuters)

*Russia prepares for long-term confrontation with the US: Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov announced on October 1 that the country is preparing for a long-term confrontation with the US.
"We exchanged views on the prospects for improving relations between the two countries, including in the context of the upcoming elections in the United States in November. There should be no special illusions, given the bipartisan anti-Russian consensus that has developed in the United States. We must prepare for a long-term confrontation with this country. We are ready for this scenario in every sense," Ryabkov told reporters.

*New NATO Secretary General declares to fulfill commitments to Ukraine: New Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Mark Rutte announced on October 1 that NATO must fulfill its commitments to Ukraine to support the country in the fight against Russia.
The conflict in Ukraine is not limited to the front lines, Mark Rutte said, stressing his determination to prepare the transatlantic alliance for future challenges.

*Russia insists it will not discuss a new nuclear treaty with the US: Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on October 1 that negotiations on the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) with the US cannot be conducted in the current format, but must be carried out with the understanding of changed conditions.

*Russian air defense shot down two ATACMS missiles: A security source said that Russian air defense forces shot down two ATACMS missiles flying towards the city of Lugansk.
The source said that from the direction of Kramatorsk, two MGM-140 ATACMS missiles flying towards Lugansk were hit, 2 km northeast of the city. There is no information yet about casualties or damage. ( TASS)

*Houthi uses UAVs to attack major cities in Israel: Military spokesman of the Houthi movement, Yahya Saree, confirmed on October 1 that this force attacked military facilities in the Israeli cities of Tel Aviv and Eilat using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) the day before.
Speaking on television, Saree said the Houthi air force had "attacked a military target of the Israeli enemy" in Tel Aviv with a UAV. In addition, the Houthis launched four UAVs against "military targets" in the southern Israeli city of Eilat.

*Cargo ship attacked by unmanned boat off Yemen: The UK Maritime Trade Office (UKMTO), operated by the Royal Navy, confirmed on October 1 that an unmanned boat had rammed a ship off the Yemeni port city of Hodeida, an area controlled by Houthi forces.
Earlier in the day, the ship was threatened while sailing about 118 km northwest of Hodeida port. No party has yet claimed responsibility for the incident.

*US warns of risk of Iran attacking Israel: US Defense Department deputy spokeswoman Sabrina Singh warned on September 30 that the possibility of Iran deciding to attack Israel after the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah last week could not be ruled out. Ms. Singh also said the Pentagon did not rule out a response from Hezbollah or militant groups in Iraq and Syria.
On September 29, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin directed increased air defense support capabilities in the coming days and ordered the USS Lincoln Carrier Strike Group to remain in the region. *Venezuela orders arrest of 11 Argentine officials: On September 30, the Venezuelan Minister of Justice ordered the arrest of 11 Argentine officials involved in the seizure of an Emtrasur airline plane and its handover to the United States.
Speaking to reporters, Venezuelan Attorney General Tarek William Saab said the 11 Argentine officials were charged with “plunder, money laundering, illegal deprivation of liberty, illegal interference, disabling of aircraft and criminal association.”
Previously, Mr. Saab had issued similar arrest warrants for three senior officials in the Argentine government, including President Javier Milei, also on the same charges. (AFP)
*Argentine President announces plans to visit China: Argentine President Javier Milei has just announced that he will visit China in January 2025 and attend the China-Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) Forum.
In an interview at the Presidential Palace broadcast on September 29 (local time), Mr. Milei called China a "very interesting trading partner" because "they do not ask for anything" and emphasized that "the only thing they ask is not to bother them." He also mentioned Beijing's disbursement of a $5 billion loan to Argentina in mid-June, which was used to pay for imported goods from this Asian country.
