The above information was published by the South Korean news agency Yonhap on October 3, stating that both leaders plan to participate in a series of conferences with leaders of 10 member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Laos.
The summit is scheduled to take place amid expectations about how the two leaders of South Korea and Japan will work together to maintain the momentum of bilateral cooperation in addressing the growing nuclear and missile threats from North Korea as well as other common challenges.
Previously, on October 2, President Yoon Suk Yeol had his first phone call with new Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba to discuss bilateral relations and cooperation in dealing with threats.
During the phone call, the two leaders agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation and trilateral cooperation with the United States, the South Korean presidential office said.
Stressing that South Korea and Japan are important neighbors and partners that share values and interests, Mr. Yoon expressed hope that bilateral relations will further improve as the two sides celebrate the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations next year.
In addition, the two leaders also agreed to maintain regular shuttle diplomacy and meet as soon as possible to frankly discuss bilateral relations and other issues of common concern.
South Korea-Japan bilateral relations have improved significantly after President Yoon Suk-yeol decided to resolve the long-standing dispute over wartime forced labor by using a privately funded fund to compensate victims, instead of demanding money from Japanese companies.
Mr. Yoon Suk Yeol and Mr. Kishida Fumio, Mr. Ishiba's predecessor, restored shuttle diplomacy after years of stagnation and have met 12 times in the past two years.
