According to Dr. Cu Van Trung (Director of the Institute for Policy Research and Social Issues), whether or not they pass the university entrance exam, every young person should keep in mind the spirit of lifelong self-study so as to never fall behind or be out of step with the ever-changing life.
Dr. Cu Van Trung said that the concept of passing the university entrance exam is no longer suitable in the current context of many opportunities and challenges. |
Transform to adapt
Candidates have just passed the 2024 high school graduation exam. What is your perspective on guiding young people to find a place that suits their abilities and strengths, rather than chasing a "ticket" to university?
I believe that after completing the recent exam, you will have made an initial and basic assessment of the level and feasibility of your work. Based on that, each of you should ponder over your own directions and try to plan your future choices on your next path of study and vocational training.
Each student needs to base on their own strengths, interests, talents, and abilities to make the most appropriate decision. If someone is luckier, has more outstanding abilities (at the present time) and can go straight to university, it is a success as desired. However, to maintain that, that strength in the future is also an effort.
On the contrary, for candidates whose exam results are not as expected for some reason and have to turn to vocational training, consider it only a temporary situation and not a reflection of all the limitations or abilities of each person's life.
As we all know, the characteristic of the current technology era is the issue of lifelong learning, continuous learning, self-study and self-training must be very high. Therefore, whether passing the university entrance exam or not, whether graduating early or late, every young person needs to engrave in their mind the spirit of lifelong self-study so as to never become outdated and out of step with the changing life.
The concept of passing the university entrance exam is no longer suitable in the context of many opportunities and challenges like today. Some parents are not really open or see the diversity of the digital age, of the changing society as well as the requirements of the 4.0 technology era. Therefore, young people must gradually approach the demands, adapt to the necessary factors and needs in the future.
If your child's exam results are not as expected, what should parents do to "anti-shock" their children?
Parents need to have faith in their children, in the products they nurture and care for. When knowing that their children have low scores, not as expected, parents do not need to be worried. Life is a journey, the exam scores of candidates at this time may not fully show all the abilities, overall capacity, depth and potential of each individual young person.
Parents should be role models for their children to look up to, follow and learn from. They believe in themselves, in kindness, honesty and diligence in life so that their children can be motivated by the closeness and practical lessons.
The output goal must still be useful, ethical people who can help themselves and contribute to society. Parents who are strong, persistent, patient and have good goals in life are a solid support for their children.
Maintain a self-controlled mindset to conquer knowledge
In the era of Artificial Intelligence (AI), what solutions are needed to make studying and taking exams easier?
Over-emphasizing the achievements of the 4.0 era and digital technology also has two sides. It makes some people confused, insecure and worried about whether they can meet future requirements. Sometimes the pressure is created by ourselves, while if we want to go fast, we must have a foundation, if we want to develop sustainably, we need time to build.
That is, there must be a static period, a preparation period to make a leap. Let's make up for the shortcomings, the things we need to learn to suit each person's ability. Learn in many ways, learn from friends, from teachers, from technology, social networking platforms, Google... Each individual must be confident in their own abilities, avoid being influenced by the outside, but need to maintain a confident, self-controlled mindset to conquer knowledge.
Adults should guide children to “reflect”, forget about the pressures from all objective factors, and instead stimulate their curiosity, discovery and thirst for knowledge. In fact, many parents are also the factors that cause pressure for children.
I am not satisfied with slogans like “pressure creates diamonds”. Pressure should not be created without basis, on empty foundations, that is unscientific. Pressure must be based on adaptive capacity, appropriate when encouraged, motivated and pushed, so that children can strive to achieve higher achievements.
In particular, just because of pleasing adults, the media's over-inflation of the fierce competition in the 4.0 era and of digital technology has inadvertently devalued the thinking of many young people.
Adults should give children the right to choose a career. (Source: VGP) |
Today's jobs require important skills such as problem solving, critical thinking... What do young people need to prepare to avoid difficulties in their future careers?
As we often hear, in the near future, low-creative, repetitive jobs will be replaced by technology. But I think the diversity of new types of jobs is also an opportunity for young people. There are many new ways to do business and make money. In order not to become a "drifter" in a future with many opportunities but also many challenges and uncertainties - each young person must specialize in a field in which he or she has a talent.
You should learn that profession proficiently, no matter how detailed the technology is, it is still not as detailed as a specific person. We can become the owner, the mechanic, operating and managing the technology and tools of that profession.
But that is not enough, from there, young people must learn more broadly, expanding from related professions and fields. In addition, connectivity and the ability to replace when needed so that young people can flexibly move to other fields of work when needed.
I would like to emphasize again that the ability to self-study, self-train and learn throughout life to have a proficient profession along with the skills to connect and expand cooperation in other fields are the factors to ensure the success of young people.
Empowering young people
Today's young generation has the conditions to study and develop, but in reality many of them still have not figured out what they like and what they want?
Young people will understand themselves best. I hope that adults should give them the right to make their own decisions. Parents should play a good role as guides, making career choices based on understanding their children's personalities and the products they have worked hard to nurture and create. The wisdom of parents is to guide, monitor and choose solutions, present scenarios for their children to choose from, and the decision is up to them.
But in reality, we have a school environment surrounded by achievements and economic benefits that have been infiltrated from some vocational schools into the general education system to recruit students under the name of career guidance and vocational training programs. That makes students confused, hesitant, and even bewildered when having to choose.
On the parents' side, the level of awareness is uneven and very different, so the role of leading, encouraging and orienting children is still weak. In particular, the career counseling team in schools is not strong, the number of career counselors is not large. They are not really individuals with experience in society, working in private and public environments, working for hire or being bosses in real life, so career counseling for children is also heavy on theory and estimation. All of these have been obstacles in the past, so choosing a major and career for each young person still depends on the alertness and wisdom of each family and each student.
How do you think the constant changes in the world force each person to change and learn to seize new opportunities and new careers for themselves?
This question is a question that goes with the times, in Vietnam there are not many individuals who go with the times like that. Let's refer to the necessary skills of the new human being as stated by international organizations, consider them universal for every citizen to learn and need.
The set of life skills (6 early life skills, 4 skills, 6 human qualities in the machine age) is recommended for every global citizen in the current digital age.
In addition, digital intelligence, including digital entrepreneurship, digital citizenship and digital creativity, is also an issue for young people to consider in order to fulfill these criteria. To become a digital citizen, there are several factors such as building a personal image, protecting data security on social platforms, managing online time, etc.
To start a digital business, you must know how to create digital content (the ability to integrate into the digital ecosystem by producing digital content), think critically and handle work situations, and be able to use media and digital technology to solve problems or create new opportunities.
Although the development process of Industry 4.0 is fast and competition is fierce, there is still time for some countries and young people to prepare and thoroughly equip themselves with additional capacities to develop in the future.
It can be seen that some countries have a way of integrating in a way that is suitable to the capacity of the managers and residents in their society. We will benefit from the achievements of science and technology and will be the ones to use and operate it.
The society inherits and accepts, and it is not too difficult to adapt. Vietnamese people have a very high ability to update and adapt. Career opportunities for young people are extremely open and diverse. Learning calmly, slowly and persistently in a proactive state, developing the ability to observe, debate and practice thinking habits are the "technology" to seize opportunities in the future.
Thanks TS!
