Lam Dong is a province with a fairly strong agricultural development, especially in the past 20 years. In particular, high-tech agriculture and greenhouse agricultural production have been strongly developed by local people and businesses, bringing high economic value over the past many years.

To date, it is estimated that Lam Dong province has about 4,400 hectares of greenhouse area. Of which, Da Lat city is the locality with the largest greenhouse area with more than 2,500 hectares, accounting for 57% of the total greenhouse area of ​​the province.

Lam Dong province currently has more than 4,400 hectares of greenhouses, of which Da Lat city has the largest greenhouse area in the province.

In 2023, Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee approved the Greenhouse Management Project, promoting high-tech agricultural production to adapt to climate change by 2030. Accordingly, the project sets the goal of gradually reducing and eventually eliminating greenhouse areas in inner-city, inner-city, and residential areas in Da Lat city and neighboring districts.

To implement the project, in October 2023, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Lam Dong province worked with the State Bank of Vietnam, Lam Dong Branch and the Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, Lam Dong Branch (Agribank Lam Dong) on ​​developing a separate credit package to support loans for organizations, individuals and households to renovate, refurbish and relocate greenhouses to meet standards.

After about 20 years of development, many types of greenhouses have appeared in Da Lat City from popular to high-end.

Accordingly, the goal is to reduce the greenhouse area by 20% compared to the current status in 2022 by 2025 and gradually reduce it by 2030, moving towards no greenhouse area in inner cities, inner cities, and residential areas in Da Lat City. To achieve this goal, about 4,820 billion VND is needed to renovate, relocate, and support the conversion of greenhouse crops to outdoor cultivation. Of which, the funding requirement for the period 2023-2025 is 964 billion VND.

According to the reporter's investigation, the authorities in Da Lat City and Lac Duong District (the two localities with the largest greenhouse areas in the province) have surveyed and found that households do not have the need to borrow capital to dismantle or relocate greenhouses or convert to greenhouse-free production. People still want to produce in greenhouses because there is no production method that is as effective or brings more value than greenhouse production. Therefore, people only need to borrow capital to renovate greenhouses to meet the prescribed standards.

Mr. Le Doan Dinh Vu said that chrysanthemums grown outdoors are healthier, have longer and more beautiful petals.

In Lac Duong district, speaking with reporters, Mr. Le Doan Dinh Vu said that for the past 2 years, his family has moved 2,000 square meters of chrysanthemum growing area outdoors instead of growing it in a greenhouse as before. In fact, taking care of the outdoor chrysanthemum area, Mr. Vu determined that the same area, in a greenhouse or outdoors, has the same productivity and selling price. However, chrysanthemum plants grown outdoors are more sturdy, and the flowers are more beautiful because they are exposed to sunlight.

"Although growing chrysanthemums outdoors is more difficult, I have to wake up earlier to spray chemicals, but spraying chemicals or watering flowers outdoors dries faster and is more effective. In my opinion, chrysanthemums grown outdoors are less susceptible to disease. However, to be proactive, I still grow both in greenhouses and outdoors to ensure economic issues," said Mr. Vu.

According to the People's Committee of Lac Duong district, by 2025, 16 households will need to borrow about 10 billion VND to renovate 5 hectares of greenhouses to meet standards. The plan from 2026-2030 is that about 35 households will need to borrow 25 billion VND to renovate 10 hectares of greenhouses to meet standards.

Meanwhile, in Da Lat City, according to a survey, about 30 households need to borrow capital to renovate 10 hectares of greenhouses to meet standards with a loan amount of 21 billion VND in 2025. From 2026-2030, about 75 households need to borrow about 40 billion VND to renovate 30 hectares of greenhouses to meet standards.

According to the plan of Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee, the goal by 2025, the above project will reduce 20% of the area of ​​greenhouses for agricultural production in inner-city, inner-city, and residential areas (wards 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12) in Da Lat City and neighboring districts compared to the current situation in 2022. By 2030, gradually reduce and move towards no more greenhouse area in inner-city, inner-city, and residential areas in Da Lat City compared to the current situation in 2022.

The total cost of implementing the project is more than 176 billion VND, including about 3 billion VND from the state budget (accounting for 1.7%), and more than 173 billion VND from organizations and individuals (accounting for 98.3%).
