Potential risks

Going to the toilet . While using the toilet, people unconsciously hold their breath to "strain." This can cause a sudden increase in blood pressure, putting stress on the heart, and potentially leading to cardiac arrest in people with acute coronary syndrome or other cardiovascular diseases.

Defecation can also trigger a vagal response, slowing the heart rate. A vagal response can put additional stress on the heart and lead to cardiac arrest.

Taking a bath . Bathing in water that is too hot or soaking in a hot tub up to your shoulders can increase stress levels in the body. In people with heart disease or high blood pressure, this can increase the risk of cardiovascular events.

Showering . Showering with water that is too cold or too hot can cause a rapid increase in heart rate and stress on the capillaries and arteries. This can cause cardiac arrest in people with underlying heart disease.

Physical activity . Excessive exercise can cause cardiac arrest, even hours after exercise, while resting and showering, especially in people with underlying heart conditions.

High-intensity exercise immediately before using the bathroom may also increase the risk of cardiac arrest in people with underlying heart disease.

Symptoms of cardiac arrest

Symptoms of cardiac arrest may include loss of consciousness, sudden collapse, gasping or inability to breathe, no pulse, and unresponsiveness.

If you suspect someone is having a cardiac arrest, call emergency services immediately and begin CPR. A person experiencing cardiac arrest needs immediate CPR until emergency services arrive.

Several symptoms can occur within an hour, or even weeks, before cardiac arrest. These include sudden shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, sudden chest pain, rapid heartbeat, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and flu-like symptoms.

What should you do to avoid heart attacks in the bathroom?

To avoid heart-related incidents while in the bathroom, you can take the following steps:

  • Do not soak in a hot tub with water up to your chest.
  • Avoid showering with water that is too cold or too hot.
  • Do not soak for too long in hot water.
  • Do not shower after taking sleeping pills or muscle relaxants, according to Medical News Today.
