Although coffee is known to help you stay alert, increase energy and focus, many people feel sleepy after drinking it. This can be due to a variety of reasons.
To better understand why coffee causes drowsiness in some people, we need to consider various factors, including individual health conditions, according to Onlymyhealth (India).
Ms. Varsha Kachroo, an endocrinologist at Yatharth Super Speciality Hospital (India), pointed out some causes of the above problem.
Sudden drop in dopamine
According to Ms. Kachroo, when drinking coffee, caffeine increases the amount of dopamine - a neurotransmitter that helps us feel happy and alert. That is why many people feel more energetic and focused after drinking a cup of coffee.
However, this effect only lasts for a while. When the caffeine wears off, the amount of dopamine in the body drops suddenly, making us feel tired, sluggish, and even more sleepy than before drinking coffee.
Sudden sugar drop
Dr Kachroo says many types of coffee, especially those with added sugar like lattes or frappuccinos, can make us sleepy.
When we drink sugary drinks, our blood sugar levels rise rapidly, making us feel alert and excited. However, after that, the blood sugar levels drop suddenly, making us feel tired and sleepy.
Add sugar to coffee
When we add milk, sugar, and cream to our coffee, the calories increase significantly. This can cause us to take in too many calories in one drink, leading to a feeling of fullness and drowsiness.
This is because the body takes longer to digest these high-calorie drinks, making us feel tired and sluggish.
Caffeine sometimes causes drowsiness.
Caffeine doesn't always keep us awake. For people who are already tired, caffeine can have the opposite effect, making them feel even sleepier.
This is because when the body is too tired, caffeine cannot stimulate us to stay awake as usual but instead increases the feeling of wanting to sleep.
So if you are feeling exhausted, you should take a break instead of reaching for a coffee.
Hereditary
Everyone's body reacts differently to caffeine, and this is largely determined by genetics.
Some people can drink a lot of coffee and still sleep well, while others can get a little sleepless with just one cup. This difference is due to how quickly our bodies metabolize caffeine.
Medicine
Caffeine can make sleeping pills or antidepressants more effective, causing more sleepiness. If you are taking any medications, especially psychiatric medications, be careful when using caffeine.
To be safe, it's best to consult your doctor or pharmacist before combining caffeine with any medications.
Sleep quality
The quality of your sleep has a big impact on your health. A new study suggests that drinking coffee in the morning after a bad night's sleep can make it harder for your body to control blood sugar levels.
So, to stay healthy, we should try to get enough sleep and maybe consider cutting back on coffee, especially after sleepless nights.
