Talent is undeniable, if only coach Popov could control his emotions better

Before coming to Thanh Hoa Club, Mr. Velizar Popov was not a very famous coach. A few years working in Thailand, Malaysia or Maldives is not necessarily an important highlight in the resume of a professional football coach. So when given the opportunity in V-League, at a team with a long tradition and history in Vietnam like Thanh Hoa, Mr. Popov can be considered as stepping up to a higher level of his coaching career.

In response to the trust from Thanh Hoa Club, Coach Popov has created an impressive season. The National Cup and National Super Cup are proof of the great success of the Thanh representative's season as well as further affirming Mr. Popov's coaching ability. He has become the most individual coach in V-League and is also very loved by the audience.

Unfortunately, the value that could have further elevated Mr. Popov's coaching career, the title of the best coach in the V-League, did not come. That is not due to the professional story but unfortunately comes from the coach's overreaction.

When the 2023 season ended, VPF soon had clear explanations for removing Mr. Popov from the top 3 nominees for the title of best coach. In terms of expertise, this coach is of course not inferior to coaches Chu Dinh Nghiem, Thach Bao Khanh or Bandovic. But he received 5 yellow cards for different reactions, leading to a 1-match ban in the V-League last season. Those were all reactions that were too strong on the field and went beyond the allowed limit. Mr. Popov missed the opportunity to write a special chapter in his career because of the above... ridiculous reasons.

If only Mr. Popov had better control of his emotions.

Don't let Thanh Hoa Club suffer

By this season, Mr. Popov's reaction seemed to have increased. In just the first 3 rounds of V-League 2023 - 2024, Mr. Popov received 2 yellow cards and just 1 more card would have suspended the Bulgarian coach. Even more troubling, Mr. Popov did not hesitate to use his personal page to criticize the referees and the tournament with harsher language than necessary.

Mr. Popov is not the only one who has criticized the referee's mistakes. But unlike his colleagues, this coach has received 2 yellow cards for overreacting. If he cannot keep his cool in the remaining 23 matches, Coach Popov will fall into the same scenario as last season. That is the risk of losing the title of best coach of the year. Although in the first 3 rounds, Thanh Hoa Club led by Mr. Popov was one of the best teams in the tournament.

Punishment is always waiting for this talented strategist. In the end, the ones who suffer the most are not VPF, Coach Popov personally, but Thanh Hoa Club. The Thanh Hoa team really needs Mr. Popov's talent in important matches, not his remote instructions from the stands.
