(CLO) On December 21, a serious traffic accident occurred on the BR-116 highway near the city of Teófilo Otoni in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, killing at least 38 people.
According to information from the Brazilian Federal Highway Police (PRF), the bus was carrying 45 passengers from São Paulo to Vitória da Conquista, Bahia state. During the trip, the bus suffered a tire blowout, causing the driver to lose control and collide with a truck carrying granite.

After the collision, the bus caught fire, trapping many passengers inside and killing them. Of the 45 passengers on the bus, 38, including the driver, died at the scene, according to the Minas Gerais state fire department. The remaining passengers were seriously injured and were taken to a local hospital for emergency treatment.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva sent his condolences to the families of the victims and pledged to provide necessary assistance.
The exact cause of the accident is currently under investigation by authorities. Witnesses told rescue teams that the bus had a flat tire, causing the driver to lose control and crash into a truck. Others said a block of granite fell onto the bus, causing the accident.
