India Today reported that the accident involved three trains, the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, the Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express and a goods train.

Several coaches of the Bengaluru-Howrah train running from Bangalore to Howrah derailed at Bahanaga Baazar in Balasore district, tilting onto the adjacent track.

At that time, the Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express running from Kolkata to Chennai on the adjacent track collided with the derailed coaches of the Bengaluru-Howrah train and its coaches also overturned, falling onto a nearby freight train.

The death toll in India's worst train accident in years continued to rise as scores of people were injured and trapped in train carriages.

Several relatives told The Indian Express that their children were injured in the accident and are being treated. Some of the victims were seriously injured, with doctors predicting a “poor prognosis”.

In that context, Indian authorities requested rescue and medical agencies to mobilize all resources to quickly rescue and treat the victims of the accident.

Indian Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said he has ordered a high-level investigation into the particularly serious train accident.

"I have ordered a high-level investigation to find out the cause of the derailment. It is important to find out the root cause of this tragic accident," India's Railway Minister told NDTV on June 3.

The official also said that the state will initially provide 100,000 rupees (about 285 million VND) in support to the families of the deceased, and those injured will receive 20,000 rupees (about 56 million VND), depending on the severity of the injury.
