Biotechnology company Colossal Biosciences said the process of “reviving” the dire wolf was done through extracting DNA from two fossils of this species.

Specifically, from a 13,000-year-old tooth and a 72,000-year-old skull. Then, scientists here edited the genetic code many times from the genes of the gray wolf - the closest living relative of the dire wolf - to create cells that resembled dire wolf cells.

They extracted the nucleus of this cell and inserted it into the eggs of gray wolves, forming embryos in the laboratory. These embryos were then transferred into the wombs of two domestic dogs.

After 65 days of pregnancy, two wolf cubs were born by cesarean section. The procedure was repeated with the third wolf. Romulus and Remus were born on October 1, 2024, and Khaleesi was born on January 30, 2025.

The trio of fierce wolves currently live in a closed private reserve in England. The exact location is not disclosed, to protect them from prying eyes.
