In 2023, the TH true MILK fresh milk factory operated by TH Milk Joint Stock Company stopped running the FO oil (fossil fuel) boiler and completely replaced it with a biomass boiler, helping to reduce emissions by more than 7,000 tons of CO 2 equivalent. All metal halide high-pressure lamps at the factory have been replaced with LED bulbs, helping to save electricity and reduce emissions by about 214 tons of CO 2 equivalent. Along with that, the factory applied a series of initiatives to both ensure emission reduction and improve production efficiency such as: installing frequency converters for cold storage compressors, replacing low-efficiency blowers with high-efficiency air blowers using Turbo Blower technology; resetting the compressed air pressure used on production lines; installing steam valve insulation...

At TH Milk Joint Stock Company, many other emission reduction activities are also carried out, such as planting new trees, reducing the use of plastic materials (for example, materials for making yogurt spoons) and replacing them with more environmentally friendly materials that can be recycled. Even though they have been replaced, the company still plans to cut 50% (towards 100%) of the number of spoons that come with TH true YOGURT yogurt product boxes.

Not only does this solution reduce greenhouse gas emissions, it also promotes a green lifestyle and reduces single-use plastic waste. The company also raises employee awareness of saving water, saving energy, and limiting waste to the environment; Uses shuttle buses to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from personal vehicles; Increases the use of renewable energy in production activities.

At Nui Tien Pure Water Company Limited, solutions and initiatives have been implemented synchronously, with solutions to reduce plastic at Nui Tien Pure Water, Herbal and Fruit Factory such as: eliminating shrink wrap on bottle caps, reducing the weight of plastic in each water bottle, reducing the thickness of plastic labels, reducing the amount of glue for straws; the total amount of plastic reduced each year is up to about 600 tons.

The company also implements many solutions in the energy sector such as: Controlling building management systems, controlling lighting systems, insulating pipes, saving electricity in offices and factories, applying flexible production processes. For example, during peak hours, the factory limits the use of large energy-consuming equipment to optimize energy efficiency.

Nui Tien Pure Water Factory is also actively promoting cooperation with partners to continue developing the existing solar power system, contributing to reducing emissions of nearly 1,000 tons of CO2 per year. At the same time, the Factory has a plan to gradually convert the use of fossil energy to renewable energy and plant more trees. In 2025, priority will be given to converting fuel from burning boilers with DO oil (fossil fuel) to using biomass fuel (wood, rice husks, sawdust - by-products from the wood processing industry).

Mr. Arghya Mandal, General Director of TH Milk Joint Stock Company, representing the two units, said: “We focus on internal activities in an effort to be carbon neutral. The remaining annual emissions are offset by our participation in supporting and accompanying projects that contribute to reducing emissions and increasing energy efficiency certified according to international standards.

Emission reduction efforts are carefully measured using rigorous calculation methods, and verified by third parties to ensure effective emission reductions. All of these offset programs are fully compliant with PAS 2060:2014.

Strong green transition

On the other hand, the carbon offset projects that TH Milk Joint Stock Company and Nui Tien Pure Water Company Limited chose to support also bring social, environmental and economic benefits, helping to contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Specifically, a green project that TH has chosen to support to offset carbon for TH Milk Joint Stock Company and Nui Tien Pure Water Company Limited, is a free distribution project, donating more than 200,000 energy-saving stoves to poor households in provinces and cities across the country, especially people in remote, isolated and disadvantaged areas - action for the community and climate change - VERRA 2548. In addition to the benefits to the climate and environment (reducing deforestation and degradation of local forest biodiversity, helping to reduce 40% to 60% of fuel consumption), equivalent to contributing to reducing 400,000 tons of CO 2 ; improved stoves also bring direct benefits to society and public health by not creating smoke and reducing respiratory diseases related to kitchen smoke.

In addition, TH also offsets carbon through renewable energy certificates (IRECs), contributing to the development of green energy projects in Vietnam - specifically wind power - and contributing to the development of the domestic carbon market.

“Wind energy is clean energy compared to other fossil energy sources. Wind power technology causes less pollution to air, water and land. Wind power projects also create jobs and improve the livelihoods of local people. After making efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, we still have a small amount of carbon to offset to achieve carbon neutrality. Offsetting through wind power renewable energy certificates demonstrates TH's support for green energy projects and its responsibility to accompany the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Vietnam and globally,” Mr. Arghya Mandal shared.

At the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Summit (COP 26), the Vietnamese Government committed to achieving carbon neutrality and Net Zero by 2050. In the Resolution of the 13th National Party Congress, Vietnam clearly identified greenhouse gas emission reduction as one of the top priorities through many specific policies and action plans.

Leading this trend, since 2018, TH Group has pioneered the first step of greenhouse gas inventory, followed by strong green transformation actions. The fact that two member companies of TH Group have achieved carbon neutral certification demonstrates TH Group's commitment to pioneering actions on the path of developing a green economy, circular economy and a roadmap to combat climate change, towards Net Zero.

The two companies have conducted emission inventory calculations according to the Corporate Greenhouse Gas Inventory Protocol Standard - the most widely used accounting standard; the carbon neutrality data of the two companies were confirmed to be in accordance with the requirements of PAS 2060:2014 - a technical standard developed by the British Standards Institute (BSI), a recognized, standardized and transparent approach worldwide. Accordingly, the total amount of neutralised emissions at TH Milk Joint Stock Company is 26,670.14 tons of CO 2; at Nui Tien Pure Water Company Limited is 11,631.68 tons of CO 2 .

The process of assessing TH's carbon neutral projects is relatively smooth and fast, because the Group has a complete and professional data system thanks to its early efforts to prepare for the carbon neutral journey, by investing in advanced technologies from the beginning, while continuously innovating and having many emission reduction solutions. Since 2018, TH's units have begun to conduct greenhouse gas inventories and the data of this process is stored, recorded, and assessed conveniently with the company applying the latest SAP management system and coordinating and complying with the regulations of state management agencies on greenhouse gas inventories.

“This recognition reflects TH Group’s strong commitment to sustainable development and responsible business practices. During the verification and inspection process, we were impressed by the innovative steps that TH Group has taken,” said a representative of Control Union, a carbon neutral certification and assessment unit, at the ceremony.

According to Mr. Wouter Melis van Ravenhorst: Vietnam has set an ambitious target of achieving Net Zero by 2050, and although there is currently no mandatory emission regulation for businesses, companies like TH Group are showing pioneering voluntary actions that are leading the way. In fact, only a few companies in Vietnam have been certified as carbon neutral, two of which belong to TH Group. This achievement is a testament to the fact that sustainable development can be implemented and achieved when businesses prioritize long-term environmental strategies.

TH Group’s carbon offset initiatives further highlight its commitment to making a real difference. The group has now committed to remaining carbon neutral by 2028 — an ambitious and encouraging commitment, as maintaining carbon neutrality requires ongoing investment and adaptation.

Mr. Wouter Melis van Ravenhorst - Managing Director of Control Union Vietnam

Currently, direct greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1 and Scope 2) are taken into account, while indirect emissions (Scope 3) are not taken into account in this phase of the two companies' carbon neutrality declaration, because the quantification of Scope 3 emissions is of low reliability due to the lack of reliable data for emissions from this scope, and these data are not within the scope of control of the two units' operations. However, according to Mr. Arghya Mandal, in the coming time, TH Milk Joint Stock Company, Nui Tien Company Limited as well as TH Group will aim to reduce carbon emissions from the supply chain and related partners, thereby building a suitable roadmap towards Net Zero.

With the motto “Cherish Mother Nature”, since its inception in 2008, TH Group has consistently applied the green economic model – circular economy in all member units and followed the direction of sustainable development. TH Group’s Sustainable Development Policy includes 6 pillars: Nutrition and Health, Environment, People, Education, Community, Animal Welfare. To date, TH has become a model of the green economic model – circular economy in Vietnam.
