With the participation of the Director General of Vietnam's National Tourism Administration in this year's World Tourism Day celebration, Vietnam reaffirms to the international community its goal and commitment to developing tourism in a green and sustainable direction (as outlined in national tourism development plans and strategies). The Vietnam Tourism Development Strategy to 2020, with a vision to 2030, sets out the direction of "Developing green tourism, linking tourism activities with preserving and promoting resource values and protecting the environment."
The tourism industry and localities with famous destinations in Vietnam have launched a series of tourism products associated with natural landscapes, traditional culture, and the sustainable exploitation of world cultural heritage sites and world biosphere reserves. |
In fact, over the past two years, Vietnam has chosen the theme "green tourism" for the National Tourism Year: in 2022 it was "Quang Nam - A Green Tourism Destination"; in 2023 it was " Binh Thuan - A Green Convergence", aiming to spread the image of Vietnamese tourism as safe, green, and sustainable.
The tourism industry and localities with famous destinations in Vietnam have launched a series of tourism products associated with natural landscapes, traditional culture, and the sustainable exploitation of world cultural heritage sites and world biosphere reserves.
The next concrete actions towards the goal of green tourism are being seriously implemented by businesses, tourism management agencies, and localities in Vietnam.
Most recently, on September 28th in Hanoi, the Vietnam Tourism Association launched a competition to design applications for managing plastic waste in the tourism industry, aiming to find software that tourism management agencies, localities, and tourism and service establishments can implement and use. Tourism businesses can register and participate in implementing the criteria for a plastic-free tourism business.
According to Vu The Binh, Chairman of the Vietnam Tourism Association, the growth of the tourism industry has contributed to the restructuring of the economy and positively contributed to the overall economic growth. However, tourist activities also contribute to an increase in plastic waste released into the environment. The project "Reducing Plastic Waste in Vietnam's Tourism" developed by the Vietnam Tourism Association has been approved for funding by the UNDP to be implemented over two years, 2023-2024.
Previously, on September 26th, the Quang Nam Provincial Department of Tourism, in coordination with the Forestry Department and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), organized a seminar titled "Responsible Tourism Linked to Nature and Wildlife Conservation" to raise awareness and understanding among travel agencies about "responsible tourism towards the natural environment," and to promote inter-sectoral participation and cooperation in nature conservation and wildlife protection for sustainable tourism development.
During the seminar, 24 tourism businesses in Quang Nam province signed a commitment to work together to conserve wildlife species in order to preserve the ecosystem and protect sustainable development.
Clearly, the aforementioned specific actions further affirm the consistent policy and unified direction of action, linking all localities, destinations, businesses, and stakeholders in Vietnam's tourism industry to develop tourism in a green and sustainable direction.
