2 MU stars leave due to family reasons. |
In the Europa League quarter-final second leg against Lyon, Mazraoui started, while Victor Lindelof was on the bench. Before the end of the first half, Lindelof was sent out by coach Ruben Amorim to warm up and prepare to enter the field.
However, at half-time, both names disappeared. In the second half, coach Ruben Amorim had to bring on Luke Shaw to replace Mazraoui, while Lindelof was no longer on the bench.
According to TNT Sports , Mazraoui and Lindelof left Old Trafford due to "unrelated family emergencies". However, both are now fine.
Mazraoui had suffered a minor injury. Coach Amoirm planned to put Lindelof on the field but the player was forced to leave to attend to family matters. Luke Shaw was chosen as a replacement but failed to complete the task. MU's defense played erratically, allowing Lyon to equalize and take a 4-2 lead.
It seemed like the European dream had ended for the "Red Devils" but the drama continued in the second extra time. The home team scored 3 goals in the last few minutes to win 5-4.
Speaking after the match, Amorim added: “I watched the 1999 Treble documentary for inspiration. When the score was 4-3, I felt that something special was about to happen. The sound in the stadium today was the most amazing thing I have ever heard.”
He also had words of encouragement for the fans: “We know we have not played well at times, and deserved the criticism. But tonight showed that we can still do miracles. This season is still very special. We will put everything into the Europa League and need the fans to accompany and understand.”
The win puts United through to the Europa League semi-finals, where they will face Athletic Bilbao. The first leg will be played at San Mames on May 2.
