Stylist Khuc Manh Quan is behind MC Duc Bao's 'transformation' on Vietnam Idol

As the host of Vietnam Idol 2023, MC Duc Bao receives a lot of attention from the audience after each episode.

Familiar with his formal hosting style and elegant dress sense, MC Duc Bao surprised everyone when he changed his appearance to a youthful one and a unique fashion style when hosting this game show.

Behind Duc Bao's "transformation" in appearance is stylist Khuc Manh Quan. He said he had made careful calculations to help the male MC make an impression on the show.

According to the Hanoi stylist, he had to prepare dozens of costumes for MC Duc Bao throughout the 16 episodes. In addition to the main costume worn and hosted by Duc Bao, Khuc Manh Quan also prepared 2-3 other backup costumes so that the male MC could change immediately in case of an incident or request.

The costumes must balance many factors: suit Duc Bao's preferences and body shape; meet the criteria required by the Organizing Committee and especially not be out of style when standing next to the young Gen Z contestants. This is also the reason why the male MC often wears more innovative and colorful designs than before.

Duc Bao's change in style surprised many viewers and caused mixed opinions. Besides compliments about the MC's freshness and dynamism, some comments said they liked Duc Bao's familiar elegant style better.

Sharing about this, stylist Khuc Manh Quan said he understands the audience's psychology when they love a mature and steady Duc Bao.

"If Duc Bao kept wearing neutral-colored suits like usual, it would not be suitable for the colorful, cheerful program. Therefore, I tried to harmonize Duc Bao's previous style with some new trends such as loose-fitting suits, leather jackets, straight-leg pants...

I want Duc Bao's image this time to be more colorful, so the audience won't find it too stiff or formal," Khuc Manh Quan shared.

The male stylist said that among the outfits Duc Bao wore on Vietnam Idol, he received many reactions to the loose-fitting neon suit with floral shirt because the male MC had never worn bright colors before.

Khuc Manh Quan said that he chose this outfit because it was suitable for the filming in Phu Quoc, and the organizers also liked it because it looked new. However, according to him, everyone has a different aesthetic taste, so it is difficult to avoid pleasing all viewers.

"Mr. Duc Bao himself also feels comfortable wearing the clothes I have chosen. However, when reading the mixed comments, the two brothers also shared to listen to public opinion.

If I wear old clothes, the MC will not look new, but if I wear colorful clothes, people will say I am young and not age-appropriate. So I also try to balance things out. Luckily, as time goes on, people praise Bao's style more and more," Khuc Manh Quan said.

Khuc Manh Quan said that the biggest pressure he had when preparing costumes for Duc Bao was that there were times when the organizers changed the concept, so they had to quickly change the plan. Besides, preparing dozens of non-duplicated costumes was not easy.

Every time he films, Duc Bao will bring 6-7 spare costumes.

Bui Duc Bao was born in 1987 and is a beloved male MC. He has been with Vietnam Television for 10 years. He won the Golden Swallow Award in 2013. With his fluent English, he was chosen to host many events such as MAMA 2017, the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 31st SEA Games, Miss contests and most recently, the final of The New Mentor 2023.

Khuc Manh Quan is a stylist who has a connection with VFC films, having collaborated with Hong Diem, Huyen Lizzie, Kieu Anh, Quynh Kool... to create styles. He also works with many other artists such as singer Duc Phuc, Hoa Minzy, MC Thuy Linh... In addition to being a stylist for TV dramas and artists, he also has the opportunity to work with many other big brands.
