According to Engadget , Sony just had a booming quarter for PlayStation 5 sales. The company sold 4.9 million consoles in the second fiscal quarter ending September 30th, bringing the total number of PlayStation 5 units sold to 46.6 million, 1.6 million more than the same period in 2022.
It's also worth noting that Sony struggled to meet demand for its gaming consoles for an extended period due to supply chain issues, but production eventually returned to normal last year after the difficulties eased. By July 2023, the company announced that it had sold over 40 million PlayStation 5 consoles since its launch in late 2020.
Sony has sold 46.6 million PlayStation 5 units.
However, to achieve its goal of shipping 25 million PlayStation 5 units this fiscal year, Sony will need to sell an additional 16.8 million. That's a huge number considering the company only sold 19.1 million PlayStation 5 consoles in the entire fiscal year of 2022. But according to Reuters, Sony President Hiroki Totoki remains confident that this goal is easily achievable, possibly due to their high expectations for sales of the upcoming PlayStation 5 Slim, launching this November, very close to the year-end holiday season.
In addition to console sales, Sony also reported selling 67.6 million games in the second quarter, including 4.7 million first-party titles. However, the company is likely to achieve much higher first-party content sales in the next quarter, as Marvel's Spider-Man 2 sold 5 million copies in its first 11 days, far surpassing the previous game's achievement of selling 9 million copies in 80 days.
