Man City's victory meant Tottenham needed to win against Brighton to return to the Premier League top four; however, Postecoglou's side played poorly for the first 80 minutes of the match. Tottenham only really rallied in the last 20 minutes, including 11 minutes of added time, but it was too late for the visitors to secure any points.
With the home advantage, Brighton launched an attack right from the opening whistle. In the 11th minute, Tottenham's defense left Hinshelwood unmarked, allowing the Brighton right-back to comfortably control the ball and shoot. The ball went high, close to goalkeeper Vicario, but the shot was too powerful for the Tottenham goalkeeper to save.

The goal boosted Brighton's confidence, increasing the pressure and keeping goalkeeper Vicario busy. In the 22nd minute, the referee awarded Brighton a penalty after Kulusevski pulled Welbeck inside the penalty area, and Joao Pedro successfully converted the penalty to double the score.
Brighton completely dominated the match. In the 32nd minute, Milner fired a shot from just outside the penalty area, the ball went past Vicario's reach, but the post saved the visitors. In the 37th minute, Tottenham's net was shaken for the third time, but the goal was disallowed for offside.
After a shaky first half with not a single shot on target, Tottenham tried to fight back in the second half. In the 46th minute, Richarlison put the ball into the home team's net, but the referee disallowed the goal for offside.
When Tottenham's proactive approach failed to pay off, they unexpectedly conceded a third goal. In the 63rd minute, Estupinan unleashed a curling shot from outside the penalty area, the ball swirling into the right corner of the net, leaving Vicario with no chance to save it. The goal showcased the excellent finishing ability of the player who came on at the start of the second half for the home team.

Tottenham's nightmare continued in the 73rd minute when Lo Celso fouled Ferguson in the penalty area, resulting in the second penalty of the match. Joao Pedro took responsibility for the penalty and scored to make it 4-0 in the 76th minute.
Having conceded four goals, Tottenham had nothing left to lose. The visitors fought back strongly and surprisingly scored two goals in the 81st and 85th minutes through Veniz and Davies. After reducing the deficit to 2-4, Tottenham continued their strong attack, especially in injury time. However, Brighton held firm and successfully defended their 4-2 lead, securing all three points.
