Following the success of the first Ngo boat racing festival in 2023, the People's Committee of District 3 continues to organize the second year with the theme "A Country Full of Joy". The event aims to promote, preserve and conserve the traditional cultural values of the Khmer people in the South, while enhancing cultural exchange, learning and sharing of experiences among ethnic groups.
At around 5:45 a.m., many people gathered on both sides of the Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe canal to cheer on the dragon boat racing teams.
This year’s Ngo boat racing festival has the participation of 12 teams from Ho Chi Minh City and southern provinces such as Binh Duong, Can Tho, Kien Giang, Soc Trang. The race course stretches from Cong Ly bridge to Le Van Sy bridge.
At exactly 6:30, the dragon boat racers sped forward right after the starting whistle.
Each race has 2 teams competing. Each boat participating in the race has 13 people, in which the person sitting at the bow of the boat is the team leader, whose task is to help teammates maintain the correct rowing rhythm and balance on the water.
In the next round, the race became more dramatic and fierce. The athletes demonstrated their technique and dexterity in each rowing movement, giving the people of Ho Chi Minh City the most beautiful and impressive competitions.
The racers rowed as fast as they could, competing to get their boats ahead of their opponents.
People lined the banks of Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe canal to cheer on the racing teams.
Some people danced and sang together in excitement, cheering, contributing to making the atmosphere on the Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe canal more bustling than ever.
Many families bring their children to watch the dragon boat races. Every time the boats pass by, they cheer, wave, and encourage the racers to reach the finish line.
Mr. Phu Thanh (District 3) shared: "When I heard that there was a boat racing festival on Nhieu Loc canal this morning, I immediately brought my daughter to watch. This is a very interesting and unique cultural activity that helps me and my daughter understand more about the boat racing tradition, as well as the culture of the Khmer people."
The emotional moment of the Siriavansa Tuesday team's racers when they crossed the finish line first in the final race. The racers from An Bien (Kien Giang) excellently defeated the Khlang Muong team (Chau Thanh, Kien Giang) and won the 2024 District 3 Ngo boat racing championship.
The image of boats competing on the most beautiful canal in Ho Chi Minh City combined with the bustling crowd creates a unique cultural beauty right in the heart of the city.
Along with the Ngo boat racing competition, District 3 People's Committee also organized an art performance program with the participation of singers performing songs about love for the homeland combined with Khmer folk dances and songs.
The Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe Canal is nearly 10km long, flowing through Tan Binh, District 3, Phu Nhuan, Binh Thanh districts and pouring into the Saigon River. After more than 10 years of renovation, now combined with cultural activities and events, Ho Chi Minh City residents are enjoying the beauty of the most beautiful inner-city canal in the city.
