Coach Cristiano Roland announced the list of 34 players for the Vietnam U17 team. Among them, Thomas Mai Veeren is a completely new face, the only one who has not trained and played for any Vietnamese club.
Thomas Mai Veeren is also known as Mai Cong Thanh. This player lives in the Netherlands and has a Vietnamese mother. The midfielder, born in 2008, is currently playing for the youth team of HV Quick, a team in the fourth division of the Netherlands. According to information from the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF), Thomas Mai Veeren was once called up to the Dutch youth teams.

In 2024, coach Cristiano Roland gave another Vietnamese-American player, Maxwell James Peereboom, a chance to try out for the Vietnam U17 team. The 1m84 tall player was born in Ho Chi Minh City in 2008 and later moved to Australia to live with his parents.
After a period of training with the Vietnam U17 team, Maxwell was eliminated when coach Roland finalized the list for the U17 Asian qualifiers. This central defender has not been called up again for the national youth teams.
Vietnam U17 has about 1 month to prepare for the 2025 AFC U17 Finals taking place in Saudi Arabia in April. Coach Roland and his team will face very strong opponents such as Australia, Japan and UAE.
Coach Cristiano Roland has just returned to lead the Vietnam U17 team after an unsuccessful period in the V.League. After parting ways with the VFF after the U17 Asian qualifiers last year, the Brazilian coach led the Da Nang club for 3 matches (all losses) and was fired.
In addition to reappointing coach Roland, VFF signed a contract with Japanese expert Yutaka Ikeuchi as a "technical supervision advisor".
