According to experts, students need to know what they are talented in in order to choose a suitable career, maximize their strengths and pursue their dreams.
Majoring in math, can I choose psychology?
Le Dai Loc (12th grade math student at Bac Lieu High School for the Gifted) is worried because many teachers advise him to choose a major that suits his interests, passions, and family's financial situation.
"If my interests and talents are in two different fields, for example, I have an aptitude for social sciences but want to study natural sciences, is that possible? When my interests and talents are not in the same 'system', should I choose a major based on my aptitude or interests? I like psychology," Loc shared.
According to Dr. Pham Tan Ha - Vice Principal of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Ho Chi Minh City National University), talent and ability are different. Talent is a person's forte in a field. For example, a person has a talent for drawing, music, performing, acting... While ability is something inside, the qualities of thinking in a certain field.
This is a question that many students wonder about. There are students who are good at everything and often encounter this problem. They are wondering whether they should choose a major based on the field they are studying or majors that can develop their abilities.
"I realize that I have an aptitude for social sciences, but I am studying natural sciences, so I should reconsider what my real abilities are. When working in the social sciences, knowledge of both social and natural sciences is required. It is not true that if you study social sciences, you do not need to know anything about natural sciences and vice versa.
You are currently being misguided, focusing only on one field. That is not okay. Normally, we have to study to develop in the most comprehensive way. In the university training program, students studying social sciences still study natural science knowledge to have a clearer mindset, perception, and develop as comprehensively as possible. Psychology majors consider the B00 block combination (math - chemistry - biology), so you can absolutely choose to study it," said Mr. Ha.
Which subjects should I study well to choose graphic design?
Thế Bảo - a student in Ea H'Leo, Đắk Lắk province - wondered: "If I have a talent for painting, what major and which school should I study to develop my talent? If I choose graphic design, what subjects should I study well, and what are the job opportunities?"
According to Associate Professor Dr. Bui Hoai Thang - Head of Training Department of University of Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University), when pursuing majors related to painting, students will be trained to exploit the ability to explore, create, analyze and realize messages through images and drawings.
"Those who have a talent for drawing can consider majors such as painting, multimedia art, fashion design, graphic design, interior design, architecture, etc. Fine arts and architecture are special majors that require special talent in art and painting. However, talent is not the deciding factor, but just an advantage," emphasized Mr. Thang.
