Images taken by the Falklands Maritime Heritage Foundation provide a close-up view of the 44-meter-long ship that has been hidden beneath the ice and frigid waters of the Weddell Sea for more than a century.
Although the mast and some railings have rotted away, some parts of the deck remain almost intact. In close-up photos, plates and other food are scattered across the deck, and a boot lies among the collapsed anchor ropes. Through the debris, some of the old linoleum flooring still bears a star pattern.
These images and 3D scans were released as part of a documentary set to premiere on November 1st. The film follows the exploration of the Endurance shipwreck in 2022.
"The greatest survival story in human history" is also "a story of failure," Dan Snow, executive producer of the documentary, said in the trailer. The crew of the Endurance aimed to be the first to cross the Antarctic continent by land, until disaster struck.
The crew on board the Endurance
The crew departed from South Georgia, an island in the South Atlantic, in August 1914. But before the Endurance could reach the Antarctic coast, the ship became trapped in ice, leaving Shackleton and 27 others stranded.
After enduring the weight of icebergs for 10 months, the ship broke apart and sank before the crew's eyes, leaving them with only a few supplies and some rowboats.
Gathering their meager supplies on lifeboats, the crew sailed until April 1916, when they reached the uninhabited Elephant Island, about 241 km off the coast of the Antarctic Peninsula.
Faced with a critical situation, Shackleton and five other members of the crew set out to seek help. They traveled over 1,200 kilometers in a 6.9-meter-long rowboat to reach a whaling station on South Georgia Island.
It took another four months to organize a rescue team for the remaining members of the stranded group. But miraculously, when they reached the isolated island, Shackleton discovered that all members of the group had survived.
