On July 24, after the National Assembly approved extending the e-visa validity to 90 days for visitors to Vietnam, online travel platform Agoda released search data showing a 33% increase in searches in the two weeks following the announcement.
Passed by the National Assembly on June 24 and effective from August 15, this comprehensive reform policy has received approval from tourists around the world.
Topping the list was a significant increase in accommodation searches by visitors from France, which increased by 72% in the two weeks following the announcement, compared to the two weeks before.
Searches for markets by percentage increase | % | |
1 | France | 72 |
2 | Netherlands | 45 |
3 | New Zealand | 41 |
4 | Virtue | 40 |
5 | America | 38 |
6 | Australia | 31 |
7 | Spain | 29 |
8 | United Kingdom | 19 |
9 | Switzerland | 14 |
10 | Canada | 7 |
Other countries including the Netherlands (45%), New Zealand (41%), Germany (40%) and the US (38%) also recorded significant increases in tourism interest in Vietnam.
Immediately after the flexible e-visa policy was passed, the US took the lead in total searches, surpassing Australia, Canada and Germany.
The data analysis focused on long-haul travellers from North America, the EU, Australia and New Zealand, who face stricter visa policies than those from other Southeast Asian countries and the wider Asia Pacific region. These travellers often face longer and more expensive return flights, making them more likely to plan longer stays than those from nearby regions.
Market searches are increasing at a rate. |
The data found shows a positive sign for Vietnam’s target of attracting 8 million tourists by the end of the year. According to a recent report from Vietnam, the country has welcomed about 5.57 million tourists so far this year.
Data shows that greater flexibility and ease in visa processes, along with increased promotion and integration of flights, have contributed to this goal, with India being a prime example. After Vietnam introduced an e-visa policy for Indian citizens, data shows that India has risen from 8th place to become the second largest international market for bookings in Vietnam, after South Korea.
