Currently, approximately 300 communications service providers (CSPs) worldwide have launched 5G services, of which approximately 50 CSPs have deployed 5G standalone (5G SA). 5G continues to grow rapidly in all regions and is expected to account for approximately 60% of all mobile subscriptions by the end of 2029. In the first three months of 2024, approximately 160 million new 5G subscriptions were added globally, bringing the total to over 1.7 billion. A total of nearly 600 million new subscriptions are expected in 2024.
Mobile network data traffic increased by 25% year-on-year from end-March 2023 to end-March 2024, mainly due to user migration to newer network generations and data-intensive services such as video.
Mobile data traffic is forecast to grow at a compound annual growth rate of around 20% through the end of 2029. Around a quarter of all mobile data traffic will come from 5G networks by the end of 2023, a figure that is forecast to increase to around 75% by the end of 2029.
“The Ericsson Mobility Report June 2024 shows that 5G subscriptions continue to grow strongly. Enhanced Mobile Broadband and Fixed Wireless Access are the leading use cases, with signs that 5G’s potential is having a significant impact on service providers’ fixed wireless access offerings. The report also highlights the need for accelerated deployment of standalone 5G technology to fully realize the potential of 5G,” said Fredrik Jejdling, Executive Vice President and Head of Networks at Ericsson.
Fixed wireless access (FWA) continues to grow rapidly, becoming one of the leading 5G use cases for communications service providers (CSPs) globally, with the number of CSPs offering this service increasing significantly over the past year. FWA is now second only to enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) among 5G use cases.
Mid-band 5G coverage outside mainland China has reached 35%. North America and India have deployed quickly, with mid-band coverage reaching 85% and 90%, respectively.
In terms of user experience, statistics from a leading service provider show that 97% of user activities on mid-band 5G achieved content access times of less than 1.5 seconds, compared to 67% on low-band 5G and 38% on 4G (all bands).
In Southeast Asia and Oceania, 5G subscriptions are expected to reach around 560 million by the end of the forecast period. By the end of 2023, 5G subscriptions in Southeast Asia will stand at 61 million. 5G subscriptions in the region continue to grow as subscribers migrate to 5G, driven by more affordable 5G devices, promotions, discounts, and large data plans from service providers.
5G subscriptions are estimated to have reached more than 20% of total subscriptions in markets such as Singapore, Australia, Thailand and Malaysia. By the end of 2029, 5G mobile subscriptions are expected to reach 43% of total mobile subscriptions in the region.
5G is expected to become the dominant mobile access technology by subscriber base by the end of the forecast period. Although 5G population coverage is increasing, mid-band 5G is deployed in only about 25% of global locations outside of mainland China.
Mid-band 5G spectrum offers a balance between coverage and capacity, while improving user experience. As 5G technology becomes more widespread, the focus of many service providers is expected to shift to developing differentiated connectivity services.
Data traffic per smartphone user in Southeast Asia is expected to increase from 17GB/month in 2023 to 42GB/month in 2029.
