Diablo IV’s launch broke records for publisher Blizzard, and the game received early praise for its success. But when the Season of the Malignant update arrived, Diablo IV was met with a lukewarm reception from players, who criticized the thin content, unbalanced changes, and “boring” feel.
Diablo IV stays true to its hazy maps
While publisher Blizzard itself does not release any player data, some websites have been actively tracking and revealed that Diablo IV lost nearly 600,000 players per day in less than a month.
Specifically, data from the ActivePlayer.io website shows that Diablo IV's daily player count has dropped sharply from over 1 million at the end of July to 400,000 in the past 30 days. The monthly player count has also dropped by 122,000 over the same period.
A similar trend is happening with Diablo IV's Twitch viewership and viewership. According to TwitchTracker, peak viewership has dropped sharply from 941,000 in June to just 34,400 since the start of August. However, this drop could be due to a number of external factors.
Malignant Hearts isn't enough to keep players engaged
In addition to the lack of content variety that limits players from experiencing Diablo IV, the recent release of another popular RPG may also have had an impact.
Baldur's Gate 3 was released to incredible success and is one of the highest-rated games of all time. It broke Steam records to enter the Top 10 most played games of all time. Additionally, it is possible that some players have moved on from Diablo IV to other action RPGs from publisher Blizzard itself.
Diablo IV is still loyal to the "grinding" gameplay, so it's understandable that those who are bored with this type of gameplay. But for gamers who are loyal to this type of game, it won't be easy for them to leave this famous game from publisher Blizzard.
