DNVN - The number of enterprises investing in the agricultural and rural sector is still low, accounting for about 1.3% of the total number of enterprises. Most of them are small and medium-sized enterprises, limited in human resources, finance, science and technology, market development capacity and raw material areas.
Agriculture has always been considered an important and advantageous industry in Vietnam. In recent years, the agricultural sector has continued to develop in both scale and production level.
The production and business organization system in agriculture is increasingly improved. The proportion of processed agricultural products is gradually increasing, the consumption market is expanding, and exports are rapidly increasing in terms of output, value, and proportion of high-quality products.
Speaking at the seminar “Potential opportunities of Vietnam’s agricultural sector and the possibility of Vietnam-Taiwan cooperation in developing agricultural product chains” on the morning of July 17, Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung emphasized that Vietnam has become one of the countries with a number of major agricultural product exports in the world.
In 2023, the total export turnover of agricultural, forestry and fishery products will reach more than 53 billion USD, with a trade surplus reaching a record 12 billion USD, up 43%. In the first 6 months of 2024, the export turnover of agricultural and fishery products will reach more than 29 billion USD, up nearly 20% over the same period.
However, besides the achievements, Vietnam's agricultural development is still unsustainable, the growth rate tends to decrease. Production and business organization still mainly relies on small households, lacking linkages. The quality and efficiency of the collective economic sector and cooperatives are not high.
Research, application of science and technology, innovation, and training of human resources in agriculture are still limited and have not become the main driving force for breakthrough development. Many varieties of crops, livestock, and agricultural materials depend on imports. Attracting investment for agricultural development and services in rural areas faces many difficulties.
Statistics show that 70%-85% of Vietnam's agricultural products are exported in raw form or with low processing content. The situation of good harvest but low price is still common, production is fragmented, and the quality of agricultural products is uneven.
Outdated and unsynchronized processing technology, unattractive designs, high production costs. This leads to poor competitiveness of agricultural products and price pressure on the international market.
“The number of enterprises investing in the rural agricultural sector is still low, accounting for about 1.3% of the total number of enterprises. Of these, the majority are small and medium-sized enterprises, limited in human resources, finance, science and technology, market development capacity and raw material areas,” said Mr. Dung.
Due to their small size, most small and medium enterprises do not have enough resources to invest in purchasing testing and inspection equipment, advanced processing and preservation machinery and equipment. Enterprises and cooperatives have not yet had access to highly skilled experts to support and advise on developing business ideas and perfecting products.
The Minister of Planning and Investment expressed his confidence that the sharing of Professor, Dr. Thai Dong Soan - National Chung Hsing University, Taiwan (China) at the seminar will improve the effectiveness of application in Vietnam's agricultural sector.
Taiwan has achieved many successes in agricultural development, especially the policy of taking agriculture as the basis for industrial development and implementing the industrialization strategy. During the process of developing and implementing the Project, the Ministry of Planning and Investment received valuable advice and support from Professor, Dr. Thai Dong Soan.
“With over 43 years of experience, as a teacher and companion of more than 65% of Taiwanese farmers, the professor has made many important contributions to the development of Taiwanese agriculture.
I have heard the professor share many times about his experience in changing Taiwan's agricultural practices and I am really impressed with the approach and steps towards sustainable agriculture in Taiwan over the past 30 years," Mr. Dung expressed.
