Specifically, from October 2 to October 8, Ho Chi Minh City recorded 1,532 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease, an increase of nearly 1.5 times compared to the average of the previous 4 weeks. Districts with high number of cases per 100,000 people include Nha Be district, Binh Tan district and Binh Chanh district.
In week 40, Ho Chi Minh City also recorded 422 cases of dengue fever, an increase of 5.3% compared to the average of the previous 4 weeks. Districts with high cases per 100,000 people include District 1, District 8 and Binh Thanh District.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2023 and 2024, climate change with the El Nino phenomenon could promote mosquito breeding and increase mosquito-borne infectious diseases such as dengue fever. Especially in recent days, hot weather combined with thunderstorms has created very favorable conditions for the development of mosquitoes that transmit dengue fever.
Clean out unused plastic bins to avoid mosquito larvae
To prevent dengue fever, HCDC recommends that each person proactively take measures to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds in combination with mosquito control and prevention of mosquito bites.
When implementing measures to eliminate breeding grounds for mosquitoes that transmit dengue fever, it is necessary to ensure the following general principles:
For water containers intended for people's daily activities: Cover barrels, jars, basins... to store water when not in use; change and rinse water regularly (flower vases, flower pot coasters, water cups, poultry water basins,...) or release guppies to eat mosquito larvae (rockery, aquatic plants,...).
For water containers not used for domestic purposes: Collect and remove immediately, or if there are no conditions to remove, there must be measures to arrange and cover them, not let water stagnate and must be removed immediately within 1 week.
Notes when monitoring and caring for dengue fever patients at home
HCDC provides instructions on how to care for dengue fever patients at home, such as:
Fever reduction : Actively cool down. When fever reduction with medication is needed, only use Paracetamol. Do not use Aspirin or Ibuprofen to reduce fever.
Diet: Liquid, easily digestible foods. Do not eat or drink black, red, or brown foods or drinks.
Drink plenty of water to compensate for the amount of water lost due to high fever. If you have a poor diet, you can drink nutritious juices from fruits and milk to provide additional vitamins, minerals, and energy.
Re-examination : According to doctor's appointment or immediately when symptoms worsen.
