In 2024, Hanoi recorded 259 cases of measles across all 30 districts and towns. The number of measles cases is currently higher than the same period in 2023 (no cases recorded). Patients are distributed by age group as follows: 75 cases under 9 months old (29%); 47 cases 9-11 months old (18.1%); 85 cases 1-5 years old (32.8%); 21 cases 6-10 years old (8.1%); 31 cases over 10 years old (12%).
People need to ensure their children receive all necessary vaccinations on schedule.
The Hanoi CDC assesses that the number of measles cases is rapidly increasing, mainly among people who have not been vaccinated or have not been fully vaccinated. It predicts that more cases will continue to appear, especially in children under 1 year old and over 5 years old.
The Hanoi Department of Health has directed district and town health centers to strengthen surveillance of suspected measles cases, conduct epidemiological investigations, collect samples for testing from 100% of suspected cases, and organize the containment and thorough handling of areas with patients and outbreaks according to regulations. They are also continuing to review children aged 1-5 years living in the city who have not received all necessary vaccinations to organize supplementary immunization. Simultaneously, they are strengthening timely and comprehensive information on the disease situation and prevention measures for diseases such as measles, dengue fever, and other common diseases during the winter and spring seasons. Parents are reminded to ensure their children receive all necessary vaccinations on schedule.
According to Bach Mai Hospital (Hanoi), doctors have recently been receiving cases of measles in adults with severe complications. These patients are from Hanoi and some northern provinces. The symptoms of measles in adults are often similar to those in children, but may be milder or less pronounced. Some typical symptoms include: high fever, conjunctivitis, dry cough, runny nose, and a rash (tiny red spots appearing on the skin, usually starting on the face and spreading to the whole body).
