According to Reuters news agency on April 15, many universities in Canada recorded a significant increase in the number of applications from the US, in the context that the administration of US President Donald Trump is cutting funding for US universities and revoking visas of international students.

The University of British Columbia (UBC) Vancouver campus saw a 27 per cent increase in graduate applications from US citizens for the 2025 academic year compared to the previous year. The University of Waterloo and the University of Toronto also reported similar increases in interest and applications from the US.

At the University of Waterloo, known for its engineering and technology programs, a spokesperson said the number of students visiting the campus from the United States has increased, along with a 15% increase in website traffic from the United States since September 2024.

For the University of Toronto – seen as an ideal alternative to the Ivy League schools in the US – applications from Americans have recorded “significant growth” compared to previous years.

Gage Averill, vice-chancellor of academic affairs at UBC Vancouver, said the main reason for the surge in applications from the US was the Trump administration's sudden revocation of foreign student visas.

At the same time, increased monitoring of international students' social media activities has also raised concerns about freedom of speech and academic freedom at US universities, prompting many students to start looking for safer study options in Canada.

At UBC, undergraduate applications only saw a slight 2% increase due to the application closing date coinciding with Trump's inauguration, but interest is starting to pick up, with a 20% increase in campus tour requests from American students, Averill noted.

“We are really concerned about universities in the US, our peers, who are under enormous pressure right now,” Averill said.

According to UBC's annual report, the United States is one of the three countries with the highest number of international student enrolments. Currently, about 1,500 American students are studying undergraduate and graduate programs at UBC's two campuses.

In response to this influx of American students, Canadian immigration expects Canadian universities to accept only the number of students they can support, including housing and student services. The allocation of quotas and numbers is left to the provinces and territories.
