Open a bank account to receive funding
Như Quỳnh (20 years old, Ho Chi Minh City University of Law) said: "When the club organizes events, we often call for sponsorship from banks. The bank requires that opening a bank account will give us 100,000 VND. Club members will ask acquaintances to open it for them, or open it themselves. I also have 3 bank cards but only use 1."
Quynh added that she will cancel unused accounts because the bank only waives card maintenance fees for the first year.
Not only that, students who work part-time must also open an account as required by their workplace to receive their salary. Whenever they change jobs, they must have a bank account corresponding to their workplace.
In addition, opening a card to receive gifts is one of the attractive incentives for students. Nhat Trang (20 years old, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City National University) shared: "I have nearly ten bank accounts but I can't remember all the passwords. I opened a card before because my friends asked me to help them run KPIs, give gifts, or there was a program to enter a referral code to get 50,000 VND".
Similarly, Dieu Thuy (19 years old, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City National University) opened a bank account just to receive bonuses. Specifically, when the account opener enters a referral code from a relative or friend, both parties receive a commission.
"When I enter your referral code, I will receive 30,000 VND, and my friend, the referrer, will receive 50,000 VND," Thuy said.
It can be seen that nowadays many students open bank accounts but do not use them, or forget that they have opened an account.
Although creating a bank account brings many benefits, students need to balance the number of accounts and usage needs to avoid "unfair" fees and not being able to control their accounts.
Don't be subjective with small fees
Faced with the situation of students opening too many bank accounts/cards compared to their needs, Associate Professor Dr. Phan Dien Vy, head of the Banking Department of Ho Chi Minh City Banking University, gave some advice: "Students should open cards/accounts at banks that are convenient for payment transactions and have multiple utilities (maximum of about 2 accounts) to limit the situation of forgetting passwords, forgetting to pay card maintenance fees and other arising costs.
Even though the fees are very small, they can easily lead to overdue debt, affecting personal credit history in transactions with the banking system in the present and future.
Regarding the fees incurred, Mr. Vy added: "If you do not have any banking transactions within 1 year, the bank will automatically lock the card (except in cases where the card is renewed or the account has a balance) and the bank will still charge a maintenance fee and interest on previously owed fees."
Therefore, for those of you who have opened many accounts, you should choose to keep the accounts that are really necessary and proceed to close them.
