Ho Chi Minh City National University has just announced the results of a survey on the demand for using internal buses in the Ho Chi Minh City National University urban area (Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City), conducted by the Ho Chi Minh City National University Dormitory Management Center.
The placement of bus stops on routes is not reasonable.
The survey took place from April 25 to 30, with 18,540 boarding students participating. Accordingly, 34.94% of boarding students have a need to travel by bus and the most frequent destinations are the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (24%), University of Technology (21.12%), University of Natural Sciences (17.89%) and University of Economics and Law (14.90%).
The survey results show that the placement of bus stops on the routes is unreasonable and inappropriate, for example, they are located near trash bins, some stops have no buses passing by and no students waiting. Many stops do not have shelters or signs, etc.
More worrying is the frequent occurrence of jostling, pushing, and failure to queue when getting on and off buses; theft and harassment on buses still occur. Giving up seats to the elderly, the disabled, pregnant women, and children is not common.
Administrative boundaries make it difficult for students to take the bus.
The survey results also show that current bus routes do not cover locations in the Ho Chi Minh City National University urban area such as the National Defense and Security Education Center, Faculty of Medicine, and Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien metro station.
Associate Professor Dr. Vu Hai Quan - Director of Ho Chi Minh City National University - said: "Although there are more than 8,000 students from Binh Duong and Dong Nai studying at Ho Chi Minh City National University, there is still no bus route from the two localities to Ho Chi Minh City National University.
If there is a bus route connecting to the Ho Chi Minh City National University urban area and is subsidized like Ho Chi Minh City, it will solve the travel needs of many students in these two localities."
Mr. Quan also said that according to the content of the cooperation agreement signed in 2024 between Bien Hoa city (Dong Nai); Di An, Thuan An (Binh Duong); Thu Duc (HCMC) and Ho Chi Minh City National University, the units will coordinate to research and propose opening many bus routes connecting traffic between localities and Ho Chi Minh City National University.
"Ho Chi Minh City National University hopes that in the coming time, the authorities operating bus routes in the three localities of Ho Chi Minh City - Dong Nai - Binh Duong will coordinate with Ho Chi Minh City National University to effectively deploy bus routes, routes, stops, pick-up stations, etc. Thereby, blurring the "administrative boundaries" and creating a route connection to better serve students and people, especially when metro line No. 1 comes into operation in the near future," said Mr. Quan.
Desire to have an internal bus route in the urban area of Ho Chi Minh City National University
In addition, nearly half of the surveyed students wanted an internal bus route within the Ho Chi Minh City National University urban area for convenient travel.
According to students, bus trips should start earlier, from 5am, and end later, around 10-11pm; the interval between two trips during rush hours should be shortened by 3-5 minutes/trip, and the fare should be 3,000 VND/trip.
Investing in internal bus routes covering all units in the urban area of Ho Chi Minh City National University is very necessary, meeting the travel needs of students; thereby creating the habit of using public transport among students, contributing to reducing environmental pollution and traffic accidents.
