AVOID EMOTIONAL EVALUATION CRITERIA

On forums, many students write articles expressing their feelings about their lecturers. Some students complain that this teacher is difficult, gives strict grades, takes attendance, another teacher rarely lectures but mainly lets students discuss... But those same teachers are evaluated by other students as serious, helping students to be disciplined, increase interaction, and be proactive...

Every semester, students are surveyed to get feedback on their lecturers' teaching activities.

Master Vo Van Viet, Head of the Department of Quality Management at Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry, said that this was a personal opinion with some emotional aspects of some students. Therefore, according to Master Viet, providing criteria to ensure objectivity and avoid emotional evaluation to get accurate results is extremely important in surveys to evaluate the teaching activities of teachers.

"At the end of each semester, Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry conducts a survey. The survey will provide 37 criteria on subjects and teaching materials, teaching methods and content, assessment, pedagogical style and general assessment. Each criterion has a scale of 1 to 5 corresponding to the levels," Master Viet informed. In addition to "scoring" with the above 5 levels, students can also give suggestions to teachers and the school to improve the quality of teaching and training.

At Ho Chi Minh City University of Law, the survey also takes place once a semester with a questionnaire developed and updated including 20 evaluation criteria on course content and teaching methods of teachers, including discipline, objectivity and fairness, attraction and creation of an interesting learning environment, teachers' respect for students... In addition, there is a section of open questions for students to express their opinions and suggestions.

However, in the survey, students must also declare information such as the percentage of time spent attending class and the average number of hours spent self-studying each week. This information will reflect the reliability of the scores or the students' opinions of the teacher. Because for a student who attends less than 50% of class and only studies less than 1 hour per week, the way the teacher is "scored" will be very different from a student who attends 100% of class and studies more than 10 hours per week.

Meanwhile, Nguyen Tat Thanh University and Ho Chi Minh City University of Foreign Languages and Information Technology focus on the factors of seriousness, objectivity, accuracy and fairness in teachers' assessment, responsibility, enthusiasm in supporting students, practical knowledge, active teaching methods, pedagogical style...

10 YEARS, ONLY 1 TEACHER ADJUSTS TEACHING HOURS FROM SURVEY RESULTS

Master Vu Duy Cuong, Director of the Center for Quality Assurance and Educational Methods at Ho Chi Minh City University of Law, said: "Through surveys, we see that students often highly appreciate the content and teaching materials, as well as make high demands on improving teaching methods."

It is known that after the results of processing the student questionnaires, the general survey results and those of each lecturer will be sent by the Quality Assurance Center of Ho Chi Minh City University of Law to the board of directors and specialized faculties so that the faculties have data to exchange, recommend teachers to improve (if necessary) or synthesize into information for rewards or consideration of emulation titles.

However, according to Master Duy Cuong, in reality, through survey results, in the past 10 years, the school only had one teacher who had to adjust teaching hours due to low survey results as well as student feedback.

Master Dam Duc Tuyen, Head of the Examination and Quality Management Department of the University of Finance and Marketing, also commented that with the same teacher, some students like and find it suitable, while others do not. "Therefore, any form that does not meet the reliability will be eliminated. For example, giving the same score for all criteria, from top to bottom or vice versa," said Master Tuyen.

Master Tuyen informed that up to now, no teacher of the school has received a "weak" score, only average and above average scores. "The school will work with the faculty to exchange and improve the expertise and teaching methods of teachers who have not received good feedback on the criteria of teaching expertise, or make adjustments in their behavior and behavior with students if there are any comments," said Master Tuyen.

Student feedback on lecturers is an important channel to implement democratic regulations in schools, contributing to enhancing the sense of responsibility of lecturers.

K IMPORTANT INFORMATION CHANNEL FOR QUALITY IMPROVEMENT

According to Master Vo Van Viet, universities do not use survey results to force a teacher who does not have a high evaluation score to quit or reduce teaching hours, but those results will be the basis for teachers to promote their strengths and overcome their limitations to improve their teaching work.

"Training quality is currently a matter of survival for universities, improving training quality is a top priority. Therefore, surveying students on teaching activities of lecturers, when conducted effectively, will be very meaningful for schools to have reliable results through numbers, from which to carry out measures to improve training quality and scientific research", Master Vu Duy Cuong acknowledged.

Master Bui Quang Trung, Head of Communications Department of Nguyen Tat Thanh University, also said that over the years, the activity of students evaluating teachers has created an additional information channel to help teachers adjust their teaching activities and enhance their sense of responsibility in implementing the training goals of the university. In addition, students can also express their thoughts, aspirations, and opinions about the teaching activities of teachers.

"This is an activity that needs to be maintained to implement democratic regulations in schools, contributing to raising teachers' sense of responsibility; at the same time, strengthening learners' sense of responsibility for their rights and obligations to study and practice, thereby contributing to improving the training quality of university education institutions," said Ms. Le Thi Tuyet Anh, Head of the Department of Examination - Education Quality Assurance, Ho Chi Minh City University of Foreign Languages and Information Technology.

Students' assessments are quite accurate.

In the past, it can be said that collecting students' opinions on teachers' teaching activities has contributed to improving the quality of teaching. Because after each survey, the results will be displayed on the teachers' account system, and the departments will also receive reports. Through that, teachers will know where they are good or not, and will be aware of adjusting their teaching activities, and the department will also monitor this.

In my opinion, student evaluation is quite accurate, because all students have to do the survey, so the majority opinion will reflect the actual quality of teaching. Not to mention that teachers teach many classes and every class has to complete the survey.

Master Chau The Huu

(Lecturer at Ho Chi Minh City University of Foreign Languages and Information Technology)

I hope the teacher will listen.

Every time the school conducts a survey, I study the questionnaire very carefully and take it seriously because I know that this has a great impact on teachers and the school. Personally, I like teachers who are enthusiastic, have a lot of practical knowledge and create a lot of content for students to discuss to increase their initiative and skills in analysis, evaluation and problem solving. Therefore, in the general evaluation, I often give my opinion like that and hope that teachers will listen.

Nguyen Thu Huong

(Final year student majoring in business administration, University of Finance - Marketing)

The important thing is that teachers are always dedicated.

The evaluation will certainly have students' conflicting opinions about the same teacher. However, I find the questionnaire quite comprehensive and if the survey is conducted on a school-wide student scale, the results will still reflect the reality of the teacher. For me, the most important thing is that when teachers go to class, they are always dedicated, have high professional knowledge and respect students.
