Built on the Mozaic 3+ platform, the Exos M hard drive marks a major step forward in data storage, according to Tom's Guide . According to Seagate, this is the highest capacity hard drive the company has ever created.
Seagate's First HAMR Hard Drive for Consumers
Seagate has been researching and developing HAMR technology since 2007. Despite multiple announcements about the release of devices using this technology, the launch of HAMR hard drives on the market has been delayed. In 2022, Seagate said the technology was ready, but the first HAMR drives were only available to a limited number of customers. Now, the Exos M drive will bring the new technology to more consumers.
The Exos M line of hard drives currently includes two models, a 32TB version that uses stacked magnetic recording (SMR) technology and a 30TB version that uses conventional magnetic recording (CMR). However, there is some confusion over the naming of this new product line. The official product page lists it as Exos M, but the URL refers to "Exos M 3+," while the YouTube demo video features both variants. Seagate has yet to comment on the final product name.
A highlight of the Exos M is its compatibility with existing computer systems, which means users do not need to change equipment when switching to the new HAMR hard drive. As a result, the technology will be introduced to the market quickly in the future.
While Seagate was the first to introduce a 32TB HAMR drive, Western Digital was the first to commercialize a 32TB hard drive. Western Digital released a 32TB drive based on ePMR technology in October last year. However, Seagate hopes that HAMR technology will give users an edge over competitors in the future.
