This is a condition for businesses to have the opportunity to develop industrial parks and areas with 4G traffic congestion such as cities and densely populated areas.
On the afternoon of March 6, at the regular press conference of the Ministry of Information and Communications, Mr. Nguyen Phong Nha, Deputy Director of the Department of Telecommunications (Ministry of Information and Communications), said that according to reports from telecommunications enterprises, by September 2023, Vietnam will have 15 million 2G subscribers. Recently, telecommunications enterprises have submitted plans that by September 2024, Vietnam will complete the discontinuation of 2G technology. The Department of Telecommunications continues to monitor and accompany enterprises. However, according to Mr. Nha, in reality, the number of 2G subscribers is not decreasing rapidly, only 1%/month.
“Through monitoring, there are many reasons, mainly due to the number of 2G Only subscribers still being connected to the network, about 35,000 devices/month. This is the main reason why the number of 2G subscribers is not decreasing as fast as expected,” Mr. Nha shared.
Currently, the Telecommunications Department has worked with businesses to build a database to review and request that all 2G Only subscribers after March 1, 2024 not be allowed to connect to the network. After 3 days of monitoring, about 5,400 2G subscribers were not allowed to connect to the network.
“After the network operator did not allow new connections with mobile phones that only support 2G technology and are not on the list of 2G phones certified as conforming to regulations announced by the Ministry of Information and Communications, we hope that the number of 2G subscribers will decrease rapidly...”, Mr. Nha said.
This also means that basic phone subscribers using 4G technology with needs such as long battery life and simple functions can still connect to the network normally. This solves the concerns of some users who only need to use basic phones such as calling and texting.
“We will also work with network operators to review, evaluate the current situation and consider additional solutions such as communication, network operators supporting the conversion of 2G subscribers to 4G,…” Mr. Nha shared.
Regarding the development of 5G network, Mr. Nha said that Vietnam has been testing 5G network for many years. Currently, revenue from traditional telecommunications services has also shown a downward trend. Traditional telecommunications services are gradually being replaced by OTT services, which are developing very quickly. Therefore, the demand for speed, quality, and new services certainly needs to be expanded.
Mr. Nha also said that in the first 2 years, businesses will deploy 3,000 5G base stations. This is a condition for businesses to have the opportunity to develop industrial parks, areas with 4G traffic congestion such as cities and densely populated areas. In addition, 5G has features such as high speed and low latency, so network operators will find new business opportunities, meeting the development needs of society.
Also at the press conference, Mr. Nguyen Phong Nha said that currently, 172 million subscribers in Vietnam have standardized information. However, spam and scam calls still occur. The Department has proposed to the Ministry of Information and Communications and received agreement from network operators to stop developing subscribers at some agents. Therefore, the number of subscribers accessing the network will decrease by about 30%.
The Telecommunications Department is also proposing to develop a number of policies that allow these subscribers to register online, opening up opportunities for network operators to develop new subscribers while ensuring accurate information and moving towards genuine subscribers.
