CHANGES IN THE ATTACK LINE
Kylian Mbappe has a broken nose and is likely to miss out on France's forward line. Mbappe theoretically started as a centre-forward in France's win over Austria, although he has tended to drift out to the left. That's where Olivier Giroud used to be, so coach Didier Deschamps could bring Giroud in and keep the rest of the positions the same. Another solution would be to bring Marcus Thuram in as a centre-forward (since Mbappe isn't a centre-forward by any means) and find another player to play as a left winger. This would give youngster Bradley Barcola a chance to make his EURO debut for France.
Without Mbappe, Griezmann will have to shoulder the responsibility of being the leader of the French team
On the Dutch side, coach Ronald Koeman made a series of changes to his forward line in the opening match against Poland. Wout Weghorst came on and immediately scored the decisive goal to help the Netherlands take all 3 points. Midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum, when coming off the bench, also showed that he is still useful despite drifting to the Saudi Arabian football field. Donyell Malen and Jeremie Frimpong were other substitutes who were brought on as the Netherlands came from behind to beat Poland. They are both hopeful of gaining a place in the starting lineup this time.
Substitution means changing the way of playing. The Netherlands flexibly switched between playing in a 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1 formation. Accordingly, coach Koeman has the opportunity to reflect again, to see which formation he leans towards. Meanwhile, Deschamps' problem is the situation without Mbappe. Perhaps the importance of Antoine Griezmann in France's attack will be raised even higher. For many years, Mbappe has always been the first priority destination when French players deploy the ball. Now they are forced to use "plan B", with Griezmann being the most influential attacker in the team.
"LONG-RANGE" WEAPON IS STILL VERY FORBIDDEN
One of the Dutch football's signature attacks, through the ages, has been the long cross-field pass to the winger. Marco Van Basten scored his legendary goal in the 1988 EURO final from a pass from Arnold Muhren. Dennis Bergkamp scored the best goal of the 1998 World Cup against Argentina in the same way. It was also the weapon that brought the Netherlands to the 2010 World Cup final. In the opening match of this EURO, that weapon reappeared when Cody Gakpo received the ball, far out on the left flank of the attack.
Johan Cruyff famously said: "Football is a simple game, but playing it simply is the hardest thing." Here is a detail that illustrates Cruyff's philosophy: a long, lofted pass to the most dangerous player, after eliminating a forest of players in the middle of the pitch. The Netherlands will continue to hone their weapons, while France's full-backs will need to be wary of this tactic.
Because the Netherlands-France match took place after the Poland-Austria match, the two "senior" teams in the group had more conditions to calculate their moves (and the accompanying playing style). If the Poland-Austria match had a winner, then a draw would be considered a guarantee for both the Netherlands and France to continue (at least the third-place team would have a wild card). Everything will therefore have to wait until the ball rolls to be clearer.
Goalkeeper Patrik Le Giang: "France will win 1-0"
France won 1-0 against Austria in their opening match, on a day when they missed many opportunities. The Netherlands are a strong opponent, with high morale after taking 3 points against Poland in their first match. However, I still think France is stronger. Mbappe's ability to play after a nose injury is a question mark, but they still have an excellent striker like Giroud. I believe that the veteran striker who is very "lucky" Giroud will score and France will have a 1-0 victory to book an early ticket to the next round.
Prediction: France win 1-0.
Player Nguyen Duc Chien: "The orange tornado is no joke"
Coach Didier Deschamps won the 2018 World Cup but has been unlucky with EURO despite reaching the final in 2016. Therefore, he is determined to win the championship in Germany this year. Kante has made an impressive comeback, but the French team will need more than that when facing the steely Netherlands. Both won their opening matches, so this encounter will be a battle for the top spot in Group D, to calculate for the knockout round. The French team is showing a lot of dependence on Mbappe, who has just suffered a nose injury, and that will be an opportunity for the Dutch team to drag their opponents into a fierce battle all over the pitch.
Prediction: 1-1 draw.
