The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) announced on April 10 that it will add a new category at the Oscars to honor contributions in the field of stunt design.
The award will be officially presented to films released in 2027 - coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the Oscars.
“Since the earliest days of cinema, action design has been an integral part of the filmmaking process,” AMPAS CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang said in a joint statement.
“We are proud to honor the creative and technical artists who have contributed so tirelessly to this field and congratulate them on achieving such an important milestone.”
The rules on eligibility and voting will be announced in 2027.
The addition of this category is the result of a years-long campaign to recognize the contributions of stuntmen and action designers - who often face danger to bring thrilling action scenes to audiences.
Many supporters argue that their work deserves to be honored just as much as other technical categories such as sound mixing, makeup or special effects - which have long been present in the Oscar awards system.
In fact, the stunt industry has been recognized at several other prestigious awards ceremonies, such as the Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG Awards), where the film "Fall Guy" won in this category in 2024.
AMPAS continues to work to expand the Oscar categories to reflect the growing sophistication and complexity of the art of filmmaking.
Last year, a new category for casting was also announced and will be awarded for the first time next year./.
