Durian prices increase slightly again?

Currently, the durian crop in the Central Highlands is entering the harvest stage, creating an opportunity for durian to continue to affirm its position, especially in the Chinese market. According to Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, the potential for durian exports could reach 3 billion USD.

Previously, the price of durian today, August 21, was the highest in the Southwest and Southeast regions and the lowest in the Central Highlands. The price at the garden will be 3,000 - 5,000 VND/kg lower than the updated price at the warehouse, depending on how the trader buys, buying in bulk or choosing the price.

In the Southwest region, durian prices today increased slightly compared to yesterday for Thai durian. The beautiful Ri6 durian variety reached 57,000 - 63,000 VND/kg and the Ri6 durian variety reached 42,000 - 45,000 VND/kg; the beautiful Thai durian was at 103,000 - 106,000 VND/kg; the Thai durian variety was at 83,000 - 85,000 VND/kg, continuing to increase slightly compared to the previous session.

For durian in the Southeast region, the price increased slightly compared to yesterday. Specifically, the purchase price at the warehouse, Ri6 beautiful is 57,000 - 63,000 VND/kg and Ri6 durian in bucket has a purchase price of 42,000 - 45,000 VND/kg; Thai durian beautiful is at 103,000 - 106,000 VND/kg; meanwhile, Thai durian in bucket is at 83,000 - 85,000 VND/kg.

Meanwhile, in the Central Highlands, the price of beautiful Ri6 durian is at 60,000 - 62,000 VND/kg and Ri6 durian in bucket is at 45,000 - 50,000 VND/kg; beautiful Thai durian is at 100,000 - 106,000 VND/kg; Thai durian in bucket is at 80,000 - 83,000 VND/kg.

Depending on the length of the shipping route or shipping area, the price of durian will vary more or less.

During the visit to China of General Secretary and President To Lam, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) of Vietnam and the General Administration of Customs of China signed three protocols, paving the way for Vietnamese agricultural products, including a protocol on the export of frozen durian.

Vietnamese Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan affirmed that this will contribute to strongly promoting agricultural exports, especially products that have just been signed to the Chinese market, contributing to the growth of Vietnam's agricultural sector.

According to the assessment of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, frozen durian is a new product with higher added value than fresh durian. Opening the market for durian products will help diversify processing, reduce pressure on harvest season, and create greater added value for the durian industry.

China is currently the largest export market for Vietnamese agricultural products, of which Vietnam is the second largest supplier of fresh durian to China. Vietnamese durian is considered to have the advantage of abundant output, harvested year-round, especially when in season, it does not compete with Thai durian. In addition, an advantage of Vietnamese durian when exporting to China is fast shipping time and competitive prices. These are factors that help Vietnamese durian make great strides in the Chinese market after less than 2 years of opening to this market.

Estimated figures from the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association show that in 2023, Vietnam exported about 500,000 tons of durian, reaching a turnover of 2.3 billion USD, of which exports to China accounted for 90%. In the first 7 months of 2024 alone, Vietnam's durian exports to this market reached 1.22 billion USD, an increase of 46% over the same period last year, accounting for 92.4% of the total durian exported abroad.

After the signing of the decree, it is expected that frozen durian exports can reach an export turnover of 400 - 500 million USD in 2024 - the first year after signing the protocol and soon appear on the list of agricultural products exported with a value of "billion dollars" in 2025. Experts believe that in the future, the export value of the durian industry can reach 3.5 billion USD, not stopping at the current figure of over 2 billion USD.
