Thanks to planting trees with high economic value, including durian, the economy of households in Phuoc Binh commune has increasingly improved, opening up new business directions for farmers.

Following the instructions of the agricultural staff of Phuoc Binh commune, we visited the durian garden with an area of nearly 4 hectares of Mr. Pi Nang Phien's family in Gia E village.

Mr. Phien said: During the field trip to see the durian growing model in Khanh Son, I found that growing durian trees brings much higher economic efficiency than other crops, moreover, the natural conditions and soil are also suitable for this type of crop.

So I decided to abandon the cashew tree, investing over 100 million VND to improve the soil, dig a water pond, buy machinery, a drip irrigation system and durian seeds to plant.

After more than 5 years of planting, now 2 hectares have produced the first sweet fruit, sold at 70,000 VND/kg, bringing in a revenue of more than 150 million VND, so the family is very excited.

Thanks to the mild climate, the durian garden of Mr. Trinh Quoc Tuan's family in Phuoc Binh commune, Bac Ai district, Ninh Thuan province has grown well.

Not far away, the nearly 3-hectare durian garden of farmer Trinh Quoc Tuan in Bac Ray 1 village also brings high income to his family.

Mr. Tuan shared: My family is currently cultivating nearly 3 hectares of Monthong durian. Thanks to the suitable soil and climate conditions in Phuoc Binh commune, the quality is not inferior to other places. The durian has yellow flesh and a sweet taste, so it is very popular with consumers.

Although only planted for 4 years, each tree produces an average of nearly 60kg of fruit. The fruit is large and even, so traders buy it at a uniform price of 80,000 VND/kg.

During the first durian sale of the season, the family earned nearly 1 billion VND from 12 tons. Currently, the whole garden has about 3-5 tons that have been ordered by traders, waiting for harvest day.

Thanks to the cool, temperate climate, durian trees are very suitable for planting in Phuoc Binh commune. However, the initial investment is very high, about 100 million VND/ha and it takes 4-5 years to harvest.

Therefore, currently some households invest in planting in the short-term to support the long-term, initially planting 10-20 trees and then gradually increasing the area.

According to statistics, the whole commune has now developed 105 hectares of durian, mainly Ri6 and Monthong varieties, of which over 60 hectares are in the harvest stage.

The average yield of each durian tree is nearly 1 quintal of fruit. With wholesale durian prices ranging from 45,000-55,000 VND/kg for the Ri6 durian variety and from 70,000-80,000 VND/kg for the Monthong durian variety, it has helped bring high economic efficiency to growers.

Comrade Kator Thi Gai, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Phuoc Binh Commune, Bac Ai District (Ninh Thuan Province) said: Durian trees are very suitable for local climate and soil conditions.

Compared to other trees, durian is highly economically efficient with an average selling price of 50,000-100,000 VND/kg cut in the garden, thereby helping households have a stable income.

In the coming time, the locality will continue to mobilize farmers to expand durian growing areas, coordinate with all levels and sectors to propagate and guide people on planting and care techniques.

In addition, continue to promote the establishment of joint groups to cultivate durian in a safe direction for export and to serve local community tourism activities.
