As long-time close friends, Mr. Ho Thanh Tam and Mr. To Van Minh (both living in Tan Thanh Tay commune, Cu Chi district, Ho Chi Minh City) often meet and chat.
At around 11:30 on December 30, 2017, both of them went to attend the ceremony at The village communal house. Sitting at the same table with Mr. Tam and Minh was Mr. Lu Dac.
When he was about to leave, the lottery ticket seller came to invite him to buy. Mr. Dac looked at the 4 lottery tickets and bought 2. With 2 remaining tickets, Mr. Dac turned to Mr. Minh and said: "This number is good, you should buy it."
After that, Mr. Dac bought 2 lottery tickets to give to Mr. Tam, but Mr. Tam did not keep them but gave them to Mr. Minh and said: "Give them to me to keep, I will tell you the winning numbers this afternoon."
Mr. Minh put the two lottery tickets in his pocket and left. That evening, after learning that the two lottery tickets won the special prize, Mr. Dac and Tam both went to Mr. Minh's house to inform him, but Mr. Minh said the lottery tickets did not win.
After repeatedly asking Mr. Minh to return the two lottery tickets to him without success, Mr. Tam filed a lawsuit. During the process of resolving the case, Mr. Minh maintained that the lottery ticket he was holding did not win a prize, so he did not agree to pay the money as requested in the lawsuit.
At the first instance trial, Cu Chi District People's Court partially accepted Mr. Tam's lawsuit request, forcing Mr. Minh to return to Mr. Tam 1.8 billion VND (the value of a jackpot-winning lottery ticket).
After the first instance trial, both filed an appeal. However, at the appeal trial, Mr. Tam withdrew the appeal.

Similar to the case of Mr. Tam and Mr. Minh, Mr. Nguyen Hoang Tuan and Lam Van Vui (both in Gia Rai town, Bac Lieu province) also had to take each other to court over a lottery ticket.
Accordingly, in October 2015, while drinking with a group of friends, a lottery vendor came to invite him to buy lottery tickets. Mr. Tuan bought 5 tickets and gave them to Mr. Vui to keep for him.
The next day, Mr. Vui came to give Mr. Tuan 200 million VND to "thank him" because 2 out of 5 lottery tickets that Tuan gave him the day before won the special prize.
Thinking that the two winning lottery tickets must belong to him because he only gave them to his friend to keep, Mr. Tuan on one hand received the 200 million VND, on the other hand sent a petition to the investigation agency.
When working with the police, Mr. Vui confirmed that the winning lottery ticket was purchased with his own money. Mr. Vui said that he gave Mr. Tuan 500,000 VND to buy snacks, then Mr. Tuan used the remaining money to buy lottery tickets.
Through investigation and verification, Bac Lieu Provincial Police determined that Mr. Tuan was the one who bought the 5 lottery tickets and gave them to Vui to keep for him.
However, in June 2016, the Gia Rai Town People's Court held a first-instance trial and declared that the two lottery tickets belonged to Mr. Vui. Mr. Tuan then appealed. At the appeal trial, the panel of judges ordered Mr. Vui to return 1.15 billion VND to Mr. Tuan.
Family life turned upside down, father and son take each other to court
More heartbreaking is the case of Mr. D. (residing in Tan Thanh district, Long An province), because the joy of winning 4.5 billion VND in the lottery did not last long before he had to sadly sue his own daughter in court to reclaim the prize money.
Specifically, in 2016, Mr. D. won 4 lottery tickets. Of these 4 tickets, 3 were jackpot tickets worth 1.5 billion VND each, and the remaining ticket was a consolation prize of 100 million VND. He then gave the consolation prize ticket to his sister.
When he heard that he had won the lottery, his son-in-law came to find him and offered to collect the prize for his father. Trusting him, he gave all four lottery tickets to his son. The son-in-law brought the lottery tickets home and gave them to his wife, Ms. H. The next day, his wife and Ms. S. (another daughter of Mr. D.) went to collect the prize.
However, after receiving the money, the children bought him a small house to live in, and divided the rest of the money among themselves. Of which, Ms. S. deposited 1 billion VND in the bank. After repeatedly asking Ms. S. to pay him the remaining 1 billion VND without success, Mr. D. sued his daughter in court.
Considering that Ms. S. had no evidence to prove that Mr. D. had given her 1 billion VND, Tan Thanh District People's Court therefore forced Ms. S. to return 1 billion VND to Mr. D.
