Specifically, more than 374 MPs and senators voted in favor of Mr. Srettha. With an absolute majority in both houses, this sole candidate of the Pheu Thai Party in the August 22nd round of voting became the new leader of Thailand.
According to the Bangkok Post, the nomination of Mr. Srettha Thavisin, 60 years old, was made during the third joint session of the Thai Parliament - 100 days after the general election in mid-May.
Although not a member of parliament, Mr. Srettha is one of three prime ministerial candidates that the Pheu Thai Party registered with the Election Commission of Thailand ahead of the general election on May 14.
Mr. Srettha graduated from Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering and holds a master's degree in business administration from Claremont Graduate University, USA.
Before stepping down in April 2023 to run for the general election, Mr. Srettha served as chairman and CEO of Sansiri - a company worth about $880 million on the Thai stock market today.
