In a recent university admissions and career orientation counseling program, a 12th grade student in Hanoi said that the math exam with multiple choice questions of true or false is still the most difficult, causing the most confusion and anxiety for students. Except for those who are excellent and can solve any question easily, students in the good group or lower groups are very afraid of true or false questions.
According to this student, in the true-false test, there are 4 questions worth 4 points, each question is worth 1 point. Each question has 4 answers (a, b, c, d). If a student answers 1 question correctly, he/she will get 0.1 point; if he/she answers 2 questions correctly, he/she will get 0.25 points; if he/she answers 3 questions correctly, he/she will get 0.5 points and if he/she answers 4 questions correctly, he/she will get 1 point. Thus, if a candidate answers 1 question incorrectly, he/she will lose 0.5 points while the difficulty of the questions is similar, which is not fair.
"If in a multiple choice test with 4 correct answers, I got 3 correct, why didn't I get 0.75 points instead of 0.5 points like now?", this student said.

Hoang Minh Anh, a 12A7 student at Kim Lien High School (Hanoi), also shared that up to now, she has been focusing on studying in class and reviewing at home to prepare for the high school graduation exam. She and her friends are still very concerned about this year's exam, which is the first year of innovation in testing methods and exam questions. However, her teachers reassured her that there are more than 1 million candidates facing the same difficulties and challenges, so they must stay calm and focus on studying to have the most solid knowledge foundation.
Regarding the exam, Minh Anh said that she is good at Literature so she is not too worried even though this year the exam will not use materials from textbooks. In her three years in high school, she has learned and gradually become familiar with new learning and writing methods, which emphasize creativity, thinking, and literary ability of students. However, she was also deducted points for writing a paragraph that was too long compared to the regulations. From this experience, candidates in this year's Literature exam will have to pay special attention to the form of expression such as writing, and the length of the paragraph.
For Math, I, like many of my friends, am most worried about the multiple choice questions. Suppose, in the 16 answers of these 4 questions, if I get 12 correct and 4 wrong (1 wrong answer for each question), I will lose 2 points, which is too much compared to the overall exam.
Sweating from stress
Many 12th graders this year said they felt “stressed and sweaty” when doing the multiple choice questions because if they were wrong, they would lose a lot of points. If they had done 3 ideas for each question and could not do the last idea, students would still salvage the situation by circling randomly.
Regarding the issue that 12th grade students this year are still wondering and worrying about, Professor Nguyen Ngoc Ha, Deputy Director of the Department of Quality Management (Ministry of Education and Training) explained that the High School Graduation exam from 2024 onwards only had multiple choice questions, students who chose 1 correct answer would get 0.25 points, but since 2025, the Ministry of Education and Training has developed and innovated the exam questions.
This year there are 3 types of questions: Multiple choice as before; True-false test with 4 questions, each question worth 1 point; Short answer test.
With the multiple choice question format, true or false, to overcome the problem that easy or difficult questions are both worth 0.25 points. Each question has 4 ideas, if the candidate gets 1 right, he/she gets 0.1 point, if the second right idea is added 0.15 points; if the third right idea is added 0.25 points and if all 4 ideas/question are correct, he/she gets 1 point. Thus, there are 4 different levels of scores.
“Candidates think that the questions are equally difficult, but that is not the case. This way of dividing the scores also requires students to study and take the test seriously and carefully to achieve maximum score,” said Professor Ha.
In addition, according to the Deputy Director of the Department of Quality Management, many countries around the world have applied the true-false question design.
The 2025 High School Graduation Exam will be organized by the Ministry of Education and Training and localities on June 26-27.
At the end of December 2023, the Ministry of Education and Training announced the format structure of the 2025 High School Graduation Exam for all subjects.According to the representative of the Ministry of Education and Training, with the newly designed multiple choice questions, the probability of getting points when choosing "randomly" has been reduced, from 2.5 points to 1.975 points (Math), 2.35 points (Physics, Chemistry, Biology,...).
