Specifically, Apple is developing metalens technology to replace plastic lens covers in a range of devices, starting with the iPad and iPhone.
Metalenses are flat lens technologies that can focus light using nano-sized pillars on their surfaces. In optical applications, they can take advantage of flat surfaces and reduced thickness compared to traditional curved refractive lenses.
Metalens is likely to be mass produced in 2024 for use in Apple’s Face ID system for the iPad Pro line, followed by the iPhone in 2025 or 2026. If development goes as planned, it will be used in Apple’s AR glasses, which will then be mass produced in 2026 or 2027.
Currently, other information about this product has not been revealed by Apple.
